With the remaining open scholarships in the recruiting class of 2021, Ed Orgeron said he plans to access the transfer portal to meet the immediate needs of next year’s roster, circling the linebacker position as a focal point. .
Good news arrived on Wednesday.
After netting a signing from Top 100 prospect Brian Thomas Jr. on Tuesday, the Tigers got another big chunk for the 2021 season on Wednesday.
Clemson linebacker Mike Jones Jr.., who entered the NCAA transfer portal on January 25, has made a commitment to LSU. He will be eligible to play immediately in 2021.
The former four-star rookie played nine games for Clemson last season, and he combined 26 tackles (four lost), two steals and a half-sack. During his freshman season in the red shirt in 2019, Jones recorded 18 tackles, including three for loss.
Jones arrived at Clemson as the No. 210 player in the class of 2018, according to the 247Sports Composite. A native of Nashville, Tennessee, the IMG Academy linebacker was the nation’s 15th outside linebacker prospect and Florida state’s 36th rookie.
LSU now has only one scholarship place available in the 2021 class, which could be used on the transfer portal or on an unsigned high school or college prospect. Orgeron could also choose to carry over any additional scholarship in the 2022 class.
LSU’s 2021 class is currently ranked No. 3 in the 247Sports team rankings, behind only Alabama and Ohio State.
The Tigers lost a starting linebacker from the 2020 roster with Jabril Cox’s decision to enter the 2021 NFL Draft. LSU returns two middle linebackers who turned as starters to Damone Clark and Micah Baskerville, as well as the reserves Josh White and Antoine Sampah, who were both real freshmen last season. LSU signed a pair of linebackers in four-star Greg Penn III and Navonteque Strong, who was ranked as the No. 1 junior college linebacker prospect.
