Episode 2 of this season on Lucifer this presents a major revelation about the celestial family tree and the power to tamper with earthly materials.

While the police procedural part of this episode is normal, it’s the drama between Lucifer and Chloe that is the real undercurrent of the Netflix show. Things were set up with a possible impostor at the end of Episode 1, but how will that evolve? Here’s a recap.

[Spoiler alert: This article contains spoilers from Lucifer Season 5, Episode 2: Lucifer! Lucifer! Lucifer!]

Lucifer Season 5, Episode 2

It’s Lucifer 2.0

The episode opens with an astronaut stabbed in the neck by another perfectly suited astronaut. They are in a closed enclosure in the middle of the desert.

In the penthouse, the fake Lucifer practices his British accent in a large mirror while being naked. This scene is drawn before moving on to Chloe and Ella at the astronaut’s crime scene.

The victim is Judy, a biochemist who worked on a project on Mars intended to transport civilians to the Red Planet. Of course, a billionaire is funding the operation. His name is Brody.

False Lucifer introduces himself and greets Chloe, but he is approached by Ella who hits him with a shoe. She is angry that he fled to Florida without saying goodbye. He catches Chloe’s signal to follow this lie, adding that he has to help Mom with the family business. They compose.

Chloe takes him aside and tells him that he lied, which he never does. The imposing Luci excuses his behavior by evoking the duration of his absence (in the time of hell) and to prove it, congratulates Dan. This makes Chloe more suspicious, but he proclaims that it’s “Lucifer 2.0”.

Chloe is suspicious of Lucifer and she is not the only one

The scene returns to Chloe chatting on Linda’s therapy couch. Linda advises Chloe that Luci is probably acting weird because he’s been in hell for thousands of years, even if it’s only been a few months for humans.

Chloe suspects he’s lying but Linda says, “At least we know it’s something he never does, right?” Chloe tells Linda that he has changed this policy as well, but she is informed that he needs time to adjust to life on Earth.

Back at the police station, Chloe and the false Lucifer question the space campers. She hints that he should use his “desire” tactic to question them, but of course that doesn’t happen. He’s too respectful and professional while Chloe plays the bad cop.

It gets funny when Sharon Osborne (yes, that one) is in the hot seat and makes a remark about bat heads. She tells the fake Luci that she never got a chance to thank him for helping her husband – from one prince of darkness to another.

This Lucifer doesn’t make jokes, do inappropriate things, threaten people, or follow Chloe’s lead. She is super suspicious. Even Dan thinks something is fishy when the fake Lucifer hands him his pudding. We know that the real Lucifer is known to have stolen Dan’s pudding.

The two men visit the lab that oversees the Mars project and chat with program officials Sam and Andie. They learn that Judy may have disagreed with someone in the lab named Donovan. She was promoted on top of him and he was fired after taking off the grip.

Lucifer 2.0 reassures Chloe that he has strong feelings for her and asks her for patience. He returns to the penthouse and Maze attacks him. She is angry that he went home without her.

She yells at him and he says he’s not Lucifer, and Maze remembers that he has a twin brother. It’s Michael, and he has an American accent! He flexes his wings.

She wants to know why he’s here. He explains how Gabriel, Raphael, and Remi all greeted Lucifer’s return to hell. But Michael thinks Lucifer is the rebel of the family without a cause. He wants to prove that Lucifer is a fake, so he takes his place to attract him and thinks that Luci “will show his true colors”.

Maze disagrees and warns him that humans are smart, especially Chloe. She doesn’t want to help him, but he convinces her that he knows things and if she sticks to his cunning, she can enjoy beating Lucifer later.

Michael stops at a Luxe to chat with a shocked Amenadiel. He assures her that he took care of the demon problem in hell and that Charlie is safe. Amenadiel looks suspicious.

‘Lucifer’ spreads its wings

Elsewhere, Chloe and Michael / Lucifer plead Donovan for their case. They’re doing a high-speed car chase. Chloe orders him to get out of the car, he loads her into his Porsche and she shoots through the windshield. Michael grabs it, spreads his wings, and floats above the car to avoid being hit.

They take Donovan to headquarters and question him. He denies killing Judy and tells them that Brody and Judy were having an affair. Brody is married, so Chloe and Michael / Luci deduce that Judy was killed because she was a mistress.

As Chloe tries to contact Brody, Dan approaches the fake Lucifer to do nothing. It’s weird, and he thinks something is wrong. Chloe comes back and says Brody is in space, so “we” stay overnight.

Michael awkwardly says that he will go home and have dinner alone, and Chloe is confused. She thinks it might be an invitation.

She shows up at the penthouse with their favorite meal and walks into Michael and Maze’s in bed. Injured, she drops the food and runs into the elevator. She still doesn’t know it’s not Lucifer, but he grabs the door and wants to explain. He runs the line on her absence and she just wants to be alone.

Chloe wants to move forward with Lucifer

Detective Chloe and “Lucifer” go to Brody’s conference and take him aside to ask him questions about Judy. He recognizes Lucifer as the person who taught him forgiveness.

Chloe urges Michael / Luci to use his “power” and he asks Brody for his biggest… fear. This definitely throws Chloe off, but Brody falls for it and admits he hates space.

Judy found out and threatened to tell everyone that he didn’t want to go to Mars and that it was for publicity. Brody says he’s been throwing up all night (his alibi) but won’t speak without his lawyer again.

Outside, Chloe tells the fake Lucifer that she sympathizes with this ordeal in hell and can’t imagine what he’s been through. She says it would be strange if he didn’t change and that due to his experience, fear and dishonesty probably followed him. Michael is overwhelmed by her kindness.

At Luxe, Linda arrives to pick up the baby but Amenadiel is paranoid about separating from him. He held him for 15 hours straight and told Linda that Lucifer is back. For him, this means that demons are always a threat. Linda disagrees and calms it down by saying that Lucifer would only return if Hell was in order.

Amenadiel is satisfied and points out that Luci wouldn’t lie, then Linda shares what Chloe told her about the dishonest Lucifer 2.0. Amenadiel is shocked but reflects on what she says.

Maze visits Chloe at the police station to apologize. Chloe insinuates that Maze and Lucifer are alone and need affection. She tells Maze that she wants to be the one to comfort Lucifer and wants to take things to the next level. For Maze, it means “boning”. Chloe agrees.

At work, Luci / Michael takes a coffee break and Chloe tries to get attractive at the vending machine. He feels uncomfortable and she offers to come after having solved the case. He can only say “OK” but agrees with Chloe when she points out how beautiful they look together while looking into the dispenser glass.

Chloe rushes in with a revelation about the case and Linda comes to talk to “Lucifer”. She wants to know who is looking at Hell and he dismisses her concerns by saying that he is being taken care of. Linda is persistent and he taps into her fear of being a bad mother. She pulls back.

Chloe receives a rude awakening

Back on the case, Chloe and the fake Lucifer enter Sam’s house without a warrant. They dodge a shotgun blast and Sam comes out with a gun. Chloe announces that she is there to stop him, but he denies having killed Judy. That is until they bring back the fiber of her carpet and the reflection of her costume in the camera footage. He is ready to surrender but Andie comes out and admits the crime.

The night ends with Michael waiting for Chloe in the penthouse. Maze comes in first and says she won’t allow him to hurt Chloe. He says he wants to take back Lucifer’s life, not destroy it. He chokes Maze down and hides her in a closet.

Chloe arrives and says sweet things to him then shoots him. She realizes that it is not Lucifer and explains that she understood when they kissed. Michael admits his true identity and takes a few more bullets. Chloe gives a speech about her unfounded fears about her relationship with Lucifer. She’s sick of Michael’s lies.

He offers a truth: God put her on Earth to be Lucifer’s “toy”. This upsets her and he leaves. Down at Luxe, Amenadiel calls him after Michael and wants to know if “Father” is aware that he is on Earth. God doesn’t know, but Michael threatens to reveal Charlie’s secret. Amenadiel tells him to go home. A quiet war rages on when Amenadiel says Michael Luci is better than him.

In the end, Amenadiel takes a trip to hell to tell Lucifer it’s time to come back to Earth. “Why? What happened?”
