The following contains spoilers from Lucifer Season 6, Episode 7 until the series finale.
Like Netflix Lucifer leaps forward with his farewell run, he was a wayward frog which sparked one of the most important revelations in the series.
After seeing said frog rain (safely) on her car one night, LAPD forensic specialist Ella Lopez set out to solve her own mystery. Add in a ‘murder board’, more than a few lost socks and a red river, and a tipsy Ella at the end of episode 7 bragged to everyone about Maze and Eve’s wedding she had learned about. to know their heavenly secrets. In the wake of this alcohol explosion, Ella in the next episode of The “Bottle” (directed by costar DB Woodside) more ably expressed the betrayal she felt towards Lucifer and the others.
TVLine spoke with Aimee Garcia about her alter ego’s well-deserved epiphany, what she own theory about Ella had been, and what she thought Luciferend of series gift to future STEM students.
TV LINE | Have you wondered if and when Ella would be brought into the Celestial Loop? Or did you just have the faith that when it was all said and done, she would learn everyone’s secrets?
I really feel like Fans asked for more than even I was. I kept thinking Ella was going to be an angel – I thought she was Elaine Belloc from the DC comics – but I was far away. I was as distraught as Ella seemed! Comic-cons fans kept asking me, “Is she going to find out the truth?” », Then I asked [showrunners] Joe [Henderson] and Ildy [Modrovich]. “Hey, the fans are asking …” So it started with the fans, then it leaked into my brain, and then I started asking [the producers], and as you know, they “work for the CIA” there and were very, very lips closed until we got our season 6 “bonus”, where, yes, she finally knows.
TV LINE | What did you think of the approach they took? Because in episode 7 you had this great comedic showcase, and then episode 8 was so deep and often sad.
I liked it. Ella is a problem solver, she has a curious detective mind, so I think it was such a nice five-season setup, where in season six she’s solving the biggest case of her life, which is the end of the world! It was the perfect way to find out. I love that no one told her, because it made her feel very isolated from her Scooby Gang. It made her feel very lonely and as a result, she was able to explore places, as a character, that we had never seen before.
It was the perfect way to distinguish his reaction from that of other characters. Chloe had to escape and go to Italy and get answers [when she found out about Lucifer], and Dan plunged into insanity, so I think it was so fitting that Ella figured it out on her own and that not only was she not surprise, she was even more upset that they hadn’t told her. It was so revealing of her priorities, that she was really upset to have been left out, almost more than the end of the world.
TV LINE | Do you know how her epiphany was going to be handled originally, if there was was not a season 6? Because I do….
Well tell me. Was it going to be a cut?
TV LINE | Joe and Ildy told me that in the original Season 5 fence cut, Ella was going to babysit Charlie and that he would grow wings. Linda and Amenadiel come in and say, “We can explain…”, but Ella smiles: “No, I understand! “
Yeah, I remember now that you say it. Well, that’s why I’m so excited that we’re having a sixth season, because instead of each character’s arc being wrapped up in an edit scene at the end of season 5, we got the entirety. episodes.
TV LINE | Allowing you to really cover up Ella’s feeling of pain.
Yes. Yes. I mean, I love Ella’s zingers, and her stage entrances and exits are simply the best. They’re talking about heavenly war, and she thinks that, you know, they’re talking about STDs. Like, she has no idea what’s going on. But it was really good for her to really explore what it means to be betrayed by the people she loved.
TV LINE | When DB [Woodside, who plays Amenadiel] told me he had done a “bottle episode”, I was wondering what the premise would be, and what it was so Great. Everyone reading Linda and Ella’s book working on their issues….
Can we say how awesome DB is as a director? I told him that, but I think I’ve done some of my best work as a professional actor under his tutelage, and I’m so proud of him. We were doing a scene where we had 10 minutes to shoot it, and it was Ella’s first time seeing an angel. DB comes in and he says, “Look, in this shot we want to see Ella think Amenadiel jumped to his death.” Then we want to see his reaction to an angel for the first time in his life. And then we want to see this fear of seeing a heavenly angel actually fly up there. And then we want to see the disappointment of being left out. I’m like, “DB, how am I going to represent all of this in one shot, and when do we have to shoot this in 10 minutes?” [Laughs] And he just put his hand on my shoulder, and all of a sudden my nerves calmed down. He said, “Be in it, and don’t be afraid to be still. And Matt, I have to tell you, it was so scary, because I’m literally watching a piece of tape [where Amenadiel would float up], and I have a guy with a [angel wings] fan in my device. But it was complete trust in DB as a director, and it’s one of my proudest moments. What a gain to see a character of faith see an angel for the first time, and that was the whole direction of DB. So, I just wanna give her some love and yell at her.
TV LINE | What did you think of the fact that Lucifer gave Ella this pencil which was much more than a pencil?
I love this. Again, we’re such a fan-focused show – literally resurrected by them – that one of the things fans keep saying about Ella is how much they love her to be a woman in STEM, and how she represents science, and how she is one of the few Latina characters in the media in STEM, and how she uses her intelligence instead of her sexuality, and how they really appreciate her making fun science. Science teachers, I guess, act out scenes from Ella in science class! And I’ve had girls come over and say, “Hey, I didn’t know what I was going to major in, college, but Ella is my favorite character on Lucifer, so I am majoring in biology. I just want to see where this takes me. It is very nice to have people who aspire to be something that they can actually be. We can’t really be demons or angels or celestials – I mean, I to do believe in angels, and nurses and teachers are real life angels – but I feel that a scientific career is more accessible than an angelic career.
I would like to mention that every year to Joe and Ildy, how Ells is such a big representation of women in STEM and how I would like her to really show it. It was like my only request before each season, when the cast come in and the writers say, “What do you want to do this season?” I was like “I wanna dance”, and that’s when the Vegas episode was born, or I was like “I wanna do more action”, and they gave me some action. But for that, I said, “I really want her to continue representing girls in STEM,” and they did. So I thought this was Lucifer’s perfect farewell gift for her. It was beautiful.
