Kidman will play Lucille Ball in “Being the Ricardos” by Aaron Sorkin, produced at Amazon Studios.
Lucie Arnaz, the 69-year-old daughter of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, took to Facebook to defend the casting of Nicole Kidman in the upcoming Amazon Studios film “Being the Ricardos”. Kidman is expected to play Lucille Ball alongside Javier Bardem as Desi Arnaz in the film, which is written and directed by Aaron Sorkin. Cate Blanchett was originally scheduled to play Ball before Kidman took over the role.
The casting of Kidman as Lucille Ball was announced on January 11, and has met a mixed response from fans of the iconic “I Love Lucy” actress. Debra Messing, who was acclaimed for channeling Ball in a 2020 tribute episode “I Love Lucy” of “Will & Grace,” said on social media that she was interested in the Sorkin movie, which prompted fans to call on the casting of Messing on Kidman. Lucie Arnaz posted a video on Facebook reacting to the casting, saying fans “won’t be disappointed” with Kidman in the role.
“It’s a done deal, but the contracts aren’t actually signed, which is why I haven’t said anything publicly about it, but felt I should at least try to calm the waters here,” Arnaz said. “There seems to be a lot of talk about Nicole Kidman [and people saying] it should be Debra Messing… I don’t know, but here’s the market and what you need to understand: we’re not doing a remake of “I Love Lucy”. No one should pretend to be Lucy Ricardo [or do] none of the stupid things. This is the story of Lucille Ball, my real mother – not Lucy Ricardo – and her husband, Desi Arnaz, my father – not Ricky Ricardo.
Arnaz said that Sorkin’s “Being the Ricardos” is not a traditional biopic, but “there will be some humor in the movie” given his parents’ comedic background.
“It’s a story of the two of them and how they met,” Arnaz said of Sorkin’s screenplay, “and what went well with research on the series and what didn’t didn’t work out, their relationship, their romance. There’ll be ‘I Love Lucy’ in it – in fact, Aaron Sorkin put it on the set of the set, a week of rehearsing and filming the show, and all these other things are happening during this time.
That “Being the Ricardos” takes place over a single week of filming “I Love Lucy” comes as no surprise as Sorkin often experiments with the structure of storytelling in his unconventional biographical dramas. The writer’s “Steve Jobs” was told in three acts, each act following the Apple co-founder behind the scenes in the hours leading up to the annual Apple Products event.
Production of “Being the Ricardos” is expected to start as soon as COVID-19 allows filming projects to safely resume.
