Dallas Mavericks superstar Luka Doncic has agreed to sign a five-year, $ 207 million supermax rookie extension, BDA Sports agent Bill Duffy told ESPN on Monday.
Doncic, one of the most accomplished players in NBA history at 22 and rapidly evolving into the future face of the league, becomes the first player eligible for the maximum designated rookie extension upon signing because he has already been elected twice to the All-NBA first team.
The deal includes a player option over the past year, Duffy told ESPN.
A contingent of franchise executives landed in Ljubljana, Slovenia on Monday to officially present the contract to Doncic and Duffy, including Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, general manager Nico Harrison, coach Jason Kidd, assistant general manager Michael Finley, Special Advisor Dirk Nowitzki and Director of Player Health and Performance Casey Smith.
Doncic will sign the contract in Slovenia on Tuesday and hold a press conference there, Duffy told ESPN.
“Today is a dream come true,” Doncic told ESPN in a statement. “Basketball has given me so much and taken me to so many amazing places. I am honored and excited to stay in Dallas as a member of the Mavericks and I appreciate the support of my fans.
“Along with this new contract, I am also happy to announce that I am stepping up my efforts and focusing on expanding the Luka Dončić Foundation. home country of Slovenia, as well as the communities of North Texas.
“I am happy to share in partnership with 2K Foundations, we will soon unveil two basketball courts here in Slovenia. We are renovating the courts from my childhood where I learned and practiced the game. Doncic became the youngest MVP in EuroLeague history in 2017-18, when he led Real Madrid to a title before being selected with the third overall pick in the NBA Draft, immediately traded from the Atlanta Hawks to the Mavericks for Trae Young and a future first-round pick.
Doncic won the Rookie of the Year award in 2018-19 and has been an All-NBA first-team selection for the past two seasons. According to Elias Sports Bureau, only four players in NBA history made the All-NBA First Team multiple times before their 23rd birthday. Doncic and Kevin Durant are the only players to have achieved the feat since the ABA-NBA merger.
Doncic, who led the Slovenian national team to their first Olympic spot and fourth in Tokyo, has NBA career averages of 25.7 points, 8.4 rebounds and 7.7 assists per game. His playoff production was even more impressive, averaging 33.5 points, 8.8 rebounds and 9.5 assists in 13 playoff games.
Despite Doncic’s individual talent, the Mavericks are still trying to get past the first round of the Western Conference playoffs. Although Dallas has lost to the LA Clippers in each of the last two playoffs, Doncic has dominated with five 40-point playoff performances, highlighted by an outing of 43 points, 17 rebounds and 13 assists that s’ ended with the buzzer-beater winning in the Mavs’ Game 4 victory in 2020 and a 46-point effort and 14 assists in the loss of Game 7 of last season.
