Luke Campbell suffered another tough loss in a big fight today, knocked out in the seventh round against Ryan Garcia, after a strong start for the veteran Britain who saw Garcia fall in the second round.
Campbell (20-4, 16 KOs) is now 33 and still a lightweight contender, but he’s yet to win a world title and this latest setback will likely be the hardest to overcome.
That said, the former Olympic gold medalist gave 22-year-old Garcia (21-0, 18 KOs) full credit for his victory and performance, and said the blow to the body that completed was the hardest blow he had ever felt.
“He’s very tough. Even when I was blocking the shots I could smell them, ”said Campbell. “It was the hardest blow I have ever received. I tried and tried to get up, but couldn’t. I felt it coming, and I was pulling back, and when you pull back, my body relaxed a little bit and that’s when it hit me.
Campbell also credited Garcia with showing a lot of heart when he stepped off the canvas and returned to the fight.
“He was very successful on his recovery from the second round,” said Campbell. “I felt it through my arm and I knew it was a beauty, but all credit was given to him, he stood up and showed he has a real heart.
“It was a great fight and I knew I was right in the fight and thought I was doing a good lap in the seventh, but it was just a fantastic body shot. I was ready to attack again and he just timed the punch perfectly, wanted to beat the count but just couldn’t, just put my hands up and say it was a great kick. a very talented fighter who will go far.
