While almost every aspect of the M1 Mac’s performance is vastly improved over Intel Mac predecessors, one notable downside has been the reduced support for external displays. In what appears to be exciting news, it looks like Apple is underselling the Mac M1 external display feature.
Apple states in its technical specifications that the MacBook Air M1 and the 13-inch MacBook only support up to 1 external display up to 6K at 60Hz. And the Mac mini up to 16K at 60Hz on USB-C / Thunerbolt and 1 monitor up to 4K at 60Hz on HDMI.
However, just as we’ve seen in the past when Mac compatibility with Apple’s Pro Display XDR turned out to be wider than what Apple says, it appears that Mac M1s can indeed run up to 6. external displays with good performance … at least in the first tests.
YouTuber Ruslan Tulupov shared two videos demonstrating the workaround he discovered (via MacRumors).
The workaround isn’t too complicated and is to download the DisplayLink software for macOS (Tulupov says works well with Big Sur) and choose a 4K DisplayPort to USB 3.0 adapter (and / or an HDMI adapter).
Depending on how many screens you want to run with this trick, you may need a USB-C to USB-A 3.0 adapter or Thunderbolt or USB-C docking station along with additional cables. , etc.
You can check out a detailed setup overview in the videos below. Interestingly, he says the M1 Mac mini and the MacBook Air he tested overall performed “impressive” under heavy load when playing YouTube videos and at the highest resolution available and even using Final Cut Pro without it. lose virtually no image.
With its workaround, it shows the Mac mini running up to 6 displays and the MacBook Air running 5 external displays. Also noteworthy, he says he didn’t even see the Mac mini’s fan go on during his tests. In the examples below, not all screens were running at 4K, but the workaround still looks very impressive.
