The MacBook Air M1, 13-inch MacBook Pro, and Mac mini are the first Apple Macs to support WiFi 6 or 802.11ax. Support for WiFi 6 began rolling out to Apple devices with the launch of the iPad Pro in March 2020, but Apple didn’t include the feature in refreshed Macs earlier in the year.

WiFi 6 offers faster speeds, extended network capacity, lower latency, and improved energy efficiency, and is also ideal for homes where many smart home products connected to WiFi are used. With more routers starting to deliver WiFi 6 performance, the update is a welcome change in the Mac lineup.
None of the Macs refreshed today have undergone any major design changes, but the MacBook Air has an updated row of function keys that allows Spotlight search instead of Launchpad, and a dictation key and a Do not disturb key in place of the function keys that were previously available to adjust keyboard brightness.

The Fn key at the bottom of the keyboard has also been updated to serve as an emoji key to display emoji on the MacBook Air.
Along with these function key updates, the M1 MacBook Air uses the same scissor-switch keyboard that Apple added to the 2020 MacBook Air earlier this year. The scissor switch keyboard is more reliable than the previous generation Butterfly keyboard and is not prone to failure due to exposure to crumbs and other small particles.
The new Mac M1s are available for purchase today from Apple’s online store, with first orders expected to reach customers on November 17.
