Macbeth tragedy trailer: Denzel Washington and Joel Coen set the mood

Joel Coen, one of the Coen brothers, and A24 have teamed up for an adaptation of William Shakespeare Macbeth. The short first trailer for the December release is, quite simply, mind-blowing.

Starring Denzel Washington as Macbeth and Lady Macbeth by Francis McDormand, the trailer is all about mood and vibes. Stunning black and white photographs and a 4: 3 aspect ratio give it a majestic Laurence Olivier feel. There is little to no dialogue in the trailer, and only a few short scenes; we see Macbeth making his way through misty battlefields and dark castles, as well as Lady Macbeth, standing at a window – presumably plotting a murder. Of course, the trailer also shows us his version of the Three Witches, one of the Macbethmost iconic scenes.

Macbeth’s tragedy looks like a departure from Joel Coen’s traditional style in more ways than one. It is notably the first film of his career that he directs without his brother Ethan Coen as co-director. Meanwhile, at least from the trailer, it looks like this version of Macbeth might be missing from Coen’s usual humor and wit, depending on his loyalty to Shakespeare’s text. Fortunately, Coen has always been a master of tragedy and dramatic irony and Macbeth has a lot of both.

Macbeth’s tragedy hits theaters on December 25 and on Apple TV Plus a few weeks later on January 14, 2022.
