CHAPEL HILL, NC – North Carolina said Mack Brown's right knee had been replaced by a surgeon who had previously played for the football coach.
Spokesman for the team, Jeremy Sharpe, said Tuesday that the 67-year-old coach had undergone Monday the procedure, which had been carried out by one of Brown's former players.
Dr. Michael Bolognesi – who played in the defense for Brown from 1989 to 1993 – said that the operation would not change the summer schedule of the coach. He was released later on Monday afternoon.
"First of all, it's very cool that one of our former players replaced my knee yesterday," Brown said in a statement. "We're talking about training young men to be husbands, fathers, and productive citizens." Carolina produces a lot of special people and I'm glad we could play a small role in Mike's development because we relied on him and on him with the rest of the surgical and anesthetic team, did a great job. "
Brown said that he had planned surgery in February, but that he had delayed him after being hired again to train the Tar Heels. He coached at the UNC from 1988 to 1997 and was hired last November to replace fired Larry Fedora.
