MacKenzie: Ralph Krueger to be named next Sabers head coach

Buffalo, NY (WGR 550) – Bob McKenzie reports that the search for Sabers coaches is over. McKenzie says Ralph Krueger is the next Sabers coach.

Krueger will succeed Phil Housley, who spent two years in Buffalo before being fired in April.

Krueger has been president of the Southampton football club for the past five years, playing in the English Premier League.

Pierre LeBrun had spoken to Krueger a few weeks ago and told him that he would like to return to the NHL, but probably not in training. Jason Botterill has apparently changed his mind.

Krueger was briefly head coach of the Edmonton Oilers in the 2012-13 season. He went 19-22-7 and when Craig MacTavish was hired as general manager, he sacked Krueger and Dallas Eakins.

At the World Hockey Cup, Krueger led the European team and led them to the final against Canada. The Canadians won the best two out of three series.

This is not the first time Botterill has interviewed Krueger. He also spoke with him before hiring Housley in 2017.

Steve Smith is the Sabers' only assistant coach who has not learned that he can look for work. Smith trained in Edmonton with Krueger.

Elliotte Friedman was the first to report that there was a decent chance that Krueger would get the job.

One of the things Krueger does really well is to train the strengths of his players. He also brings positivity to the team in his teachings.

Krueger coached the Swiss national team from 1999 to 2010
