What exactly is a “diverse dance group”? According to a tweet from Macy’s official Twitter account, this is a footstep team of Zeta Phi Beta, a black sorority who is celebrating her 100th birthday this year.

The ladies of Zeta Phi Beta performed a step routine during Macy’s Thanksgiving parade, social distancing and COVID-aware this year. Macy’s Twitter account posted a video of the routine with the caption, “What does that sound you ask? Why this is the diverse dance group, Zeta Phi Beta Steppers! They’ve put together a special routine to help us celebrate this unprecedented #MacysParade year.

The tweet was deleted but The Jasmine Brand managed to capture it before it vanished. Even so, Macy has been criticized for not being aware of the sorority celebrating its centenary. More than that, it diminished the fact that they were the first of the 9 Divines to be presented in the parade.

Macy’s has since replaced the tweet by saying, “Look who just got things done. We loved having
@ZPHIBHQ – an international, historically black sorority – with us at the #MacysParade for their centenary.

Despite all the negative reactions, Zeta Phi Beta celebrated this moment. “Congratulations again to our Centennial Steppers who participated in the Macy’s Day Thanksgiving Parade this year! You were all #Finer and represented Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated well! Zeta Phi Beta’s official Twitter account tweeted.
