Many of the spectators watching Macy’s Thanksgiving parade from their homes didn’t seem to have much to be thankful for this year.
Keyboard critics roasted the NBC show, including various acts, lip-syncing performers and everything from Rockettes not doing their legendary kicks to unusual balloons.
“The show is absolute trash. I suppose that is to be expected in 2020 ”, grabbed a viewer on Twitter.
Some were angered by the coronavirus restrictions that reduced the annual event, noting their displeasure at seeing performers wearing masks.
“These artists waving on these floats like they have a physical audience, which is why I have trust issues. Who are you waving to? ” a person asked.
As for the acts, a rendition of the cast of the Broadway musical “Jagged Little Pill,” based on Alanis Morissette’s 1995 album, seemed to hit all the wrong notes.
“I have a lot of thoughts on Jagged Little Pill. None of them are good ”, a user wrote.
Someone else argued that “the musical ‘Jagged Little Pill’ is like adding raisins to a potato salad or not seasoning your chicken.”
Several people were also not satisfied with the performance of the a cappella group Pentatonix.
“I have information which may lead to the arrest of Pentatonix”, a person joked, inviting another user to joke “The only thing that unites the Internet with each holiday season is mutual hatred for Pentatonix.”
In general, people weren’t fans of lip-syncing, with just one person say that: “I am not sure that lip synchronization can get worse ??‼ ️ But alas…. it’s a great diversion on a very lonely day ?? “
“Few things in life make me more uncomfortable than watching over-enthusiastic lip-syncing performances during the #MacysThanksgivingDayParade,” another said.
As for the legendary Rockettes, viewers were disappointed not to see them perform their classic kicking line, which was reportedly scrapped due to social distancing measures.
“Leave it to Macy’s Thanksgiving 2020 parade to have the @Rockettes’ world-famous kicking line, not kicking during their performance,” wrote a user on Twitter.
Finally, many onlookers seemed confused about the appearance of a contemporary artist Yayoi Kusama’s polka-dot clown balloon, which was immobilized during last year’s parade due to high winds.
“The first female artist designed a ball, they say,” wrote a user.
“It’s Macy’s 94th Thanksgiving Parade and they have their FIRST balloon designed by a woman ???? good God ”, another person said, echoing the concerns of several others on Twitter.
Kusama is the first woman to step into a balloon for the show’s Blue Sky Gallery series, which has included artists such as Jeff Koons, Keith Haring and Tim Burton in the past.
