Madison Bumgarner receives standing ovation, gives Giants fans a helmet

SAN FRANCISCO – Madison Bumgarner knew he would get a standing ovation from Giants fans at some point on Thursday night at Oracle Park, especially after the long he had earlier this season when he hadn’t even pitched . However, he had surely never expected it to happen like this.

Bumgarner came to bat with goals loaded early in the first inning, making himself recognized even before he had thrown a pitch against his former team. Bumgarner tapped his good friend Buster Posey on the shoulder and Posey tapped him on the leg before stepping out in front of the plate so Bumgarner could take center stage.

Bumgarner took a few practice shots, then stepped back and tipped his cap around every corner of Oracle Park as he was showered with a loud ovation.

This is the third time Bumgarner has faced the Giants since signing with the Diamondbacks in December 2019, but only one of the previous clashes was at Oracle Park and took place last year in front of cardboard cutouts. It was also his first time against Posey, who retired from the 2020 season and did not start last month at Chase Field.

Bumgarner got the better of the first clash. Posey bounced a cutter 1-0 towards the mound with a runner on second base.
