Madonna released "I Rise", the second of five songs to be released before her 14th studio album, Madame X, was released on June 14th. The song was co-written with Starrah and Jason Evigan.

Madonna said, "I wrote 'I Rise' to give a voice to all marginalized people who feel they can not say what they think. This year marks Pride's 50th birthday and I hope this song will encourage all individuals to be what they are, to say what they think and to love themselves. . "
The song begins with an audio clip of Emma González, filming survivor of Stoneman Douglas High School. González says:[They say] we children do not know what we are talking about, we are too young to understand how the government works. We call BS.

Other songs to be released before Lady X are "Crave" starring Swae Lee and produced by Mike Dean on May 10th, "Future" with Quavo on May 17th and "Dark Ballet" on June 7th.
