Magic 97, Wolves 96: another collapse

Let’s keep it short and sweet tonight, yeah?

Minnesota took a double-digit lead in the second quarter thanks to a massive run, reaching 32-6 at one point. Orlando scored 8 total points in the second quarter and had just 35 points at halftime.

Minnesota built their lead on the back of the wonderful strike from D’Angelo Russell and solid play from Jarred Vanderbilt and Jaden McDaniels in place of the power forward. I’ll come out with a longer takeout tomorrow, but the main takeaway from tonight was that Wolves appear to have two players capable of playing 4.

Unfortunately, the Wolves were once again unable to hold their own. Once again, they let their foot on the accelerator and failed to ward off the opposition. They scored 5 points in the 6:32 final of the game.

Minnesota were beaten by 17 points in the second half, the last three of which were Cole Anthony’s game winner, after Minnesota inexplicably failed to call the time out before Jarred Vanderbilt could be fouled. Yes, Vando could have just gone crazy for free throws, but Minnesota left the arena with two timeouts in their pocket. Maybe they’ll use them in the next game.

Either way, whatever. These losses are starting to get incredibly demoralizing. This team needs Karl-Anthony Towns, yes, but it was yet another game they could have won and didn’t. It’s early, but the season is (not so) slowly slipping away.

Hope everyone enjoys a good glass of red, and we’ll see you tomorrow morning for a more detailed reaction after this sting wears off.
