Magnitude 4.3 earthquake shakes Los Angeles

A 4.3 magnitude earthquake rocked the Los Angeles area on Friday night.

The earthquake struck in Carson, Calif., Around 8 p.m. local time, according to information from the US Geological Survey (USGS) available Saturday.

The earthquake was 11.9 kilometers, or 7 miles, deep. It has been felt in nearby areas of Lomita, Torrance, Long Beach, Inglewood and Los Angeles, according to USGS data.

The Los Angeles Police Department said Friday night that there had been no “significant incidents” related to the earthquake and that there had been no disruption in services.

The Los Angeles Fire Department entered into Seismic emergency mode Friday, sending firefighters’ vehicles and helicopters to patrol its 470 square mile jurisdiction to identify any damage or emergency need.

The ministry later said in an update that no “major damage to infrastructure” was noted by its staff, as well as no “loss of life or serious injury” that could be attributed to the earthquake.

“We ask you to use today’s earthquake as a reminder to be prepared,” the agency said in its update.

While authorities reported no major damage, the earthquake caused the loss of power at Marathon Petroleum’s refinery in Carson, The Los Angeles Times reported. The refinery has started flaring to burn off the gases, which has raised concerns among residents of the area.

“Flares are safety devices and flares work as intended. There were no injuries or impact outside the site, ”Marathon spokesperson Jamal Kheiry told the newspaper.

“I just got briefly shaken by an earthquake here in LA – 4.4, epicenter in Carson,” sports columnist Skip Bayless tweeted. “We had a similar shock a few days ago. Everything is going well with us. Hazel didn’t even bark. Hope the rest of the LA area is OK.
