Main Event Curtis Blaydes vs Derrick Lewis retired from UFC Vegas 15

UFC Vegas 15 just lost its main event.

The heavyweight fight between Curtis Blaydes and Derrick Lewis was taken off the card on Saturday night in Las Vegas.

According to multiple sources speaking to MMA Fighting on Friday, Blaydes tested positive for COVID-19, which obviously forced the UFC to cancel the main event. There are preliminary discussions on rescheduling the heavyweight fight at a later date in December, but nothing has been determined yet.

The news was first reported by ESPN.

Blaydes and Lewis were put on a collision course after recent victories where both fighters mentioned their interest in fighting.

Currently on a four-game winning streak, Blaydes is on a mission to win a heavyweight title shot while knocking out opponents such as Junior dos Santos and Alexander Volkov in recent performances. The only flaws in Blaydes’ UFC record are a pair of losses against Francis Ngannou, but otherwise he’s undefeated with 10 wins inside the Octagon.

As for Lewis, the former heavyweight title contender took three straight knockout victories over Aleksei Oleinik in his last outing.

Sadly, it looks like Blaydes and Lewis will have to wait until a later date to potentially face off now that their main fight has been called off.

The current co-main event for the UFC Vegas 15 card includes a light heavyweight showdown between Anthony Smith and Devin Clark.
