Samsung is back in force with new phones this year, three in total, the Galaxy S10e, the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10 +. There is also the Galaxy S10 5G, but as it is not yet available, we will not talk about it. Kellen will have a separate Galaxy S10e review, so this one will be all about the Galaxy S10 +.
There seemed to be a lot of hype around the Galaxy S10 lineup as we prepared the unveiling. It was a mix of people who liked what they saw in leaks, as well as a good marketing from Samsung. The question is whether the Galaxy S10 is up to this hype. Well, that's the reason we're here.
This is our Galaxy S10 + review!
Good
Specifications
Samsung has spared no effort to assemble the Galaxy S10 +, offering the best of the best in terms of display, RAM, processor and cameras. The S10 + is equipped with a 6.4-inch D-AMOLED HDR + display (Infinity O, QHD, 522ppi, Gorilla Glass 6), a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor, a capacity ranging up to 12GB RAM, a storage capacity of 4100 mAh, a battery of 4,100 mAh, three reversing cameras (Telephoto 12MP, wide-angle 12MP, ultra-wide angle 16MP), two front cameras (10MP + 8MP depth sensor), IP68 sealing, ultrasonic fingerprint reader, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC and MST for mobile payments, as well as the latest user interface software on Android 9 Pie.
In the United States, this package can not really be improved. Samsung even offers a ceramic model for all those who wish to experience an ultra luxurious material, of course the one we use for a week.
Display
I'm not a big fan of screens, so I can not explain in detail why, but the Galaxy S10 + easily has one of the best screens I've ever used. Not only is it exceptionally bright and easy to use on the outside, but the colors are also beautiful and the Samsung panel gives the impression that the panel is on the front glass, which is exceptional. The overall viewing experience is grade A.
Although you can say that contrast and bright colors like this are not quite "natural" in terms of screen, that's what I prefer. In the software settings, you can select the type of screen mode you want to use. For me, I'm going with Vivid, but you can choose a more natural look with the Natural parameter. With Vivid, Samsung lets you set the white balance to cooler or warmer tones, as well as RGB values. This really allows you to adjust the display to the profile of your choice.
Obviously, I can not discuss the display without mentioning the cutting of the Infinity O dual front camera. You know, it's really not that bad! Does it bother me that it pushes the system icons to the left and gives me a smaller notification space? Absolutely, but it still looks better than the Pixel 3 XL. In addition, with the help of reddit community, you can find some great wallpapers that use the cutouts in a humorous way.
Equipment
As I said, I use the Ceramic White model, which is a little heavier than the non-ceramic Galaxy S10 +. I love this product since I took it out of the box, but I can not help but think it's one of the most dangerous things that I'm I could do it. If you do not use a case with this phone, every time you take it out of your pocket, you risk an accident of over $ 1,250, which can be scary. Personally, I threw on a holster and I feel pretty good, and the extra grip for the phone is nice. All this glass is slippery after all.
As in previous years, unless you have a ceramic model, these phones are made of glass and metal. Samsung achieves maximum material excellence with the Galaxy S10 range of devices. Honestly, I do not know where they are going in the years to come, because it will not be easy to improve the situation. The most important improvement they can make is to flush the rear cameras with the body, as LG does with this year's G8 and V50. Having this slight camera shot on the back is not terrible, but again, using a holster with the phone, this solves dish on a table problem.
And contrary to what seems to be the case for all other companies, Samsung always includes a headphone jack. You must like it!
Software
When Samsung unveiled for the first time a user interface at the annual developer conference last year, I said it was the software overhaul that we had needed for years. I am happy to say that after using it now, I still feel it. There is something in older versions of Samsung software that would make me beg to return to Pixel after a few weeks, but with One UI over Android Pie, I do not really feel that need. A user interface is aesthetically pleasing, extremely responsive and agile (more than 8GB of RAM still help a phone to feel fast), and Samsung has the right amount of customization options so you can get it yourself. ownership.
In recent years, I felt lost by browsing through all the settings menus of Samsung, but One UI has dramatically reduced the number of pages to go. Although the options and settings are still very numerous, Samsung has organized them so as not to give you a panic attack, which is appreciated. No more Zoloft for me when using a Samsung phone.
Some key software information I would like to point out to include gesture navigation, which directs the navigation buttons instead of sliding down the bottom of the screen. I know some people do not care, but if you like a clean and minimal look on your phone, this is not a bad option to activate. The other is the "smart view inlay". When this option is enabled, new notifications may appear as pop-up windows, much like a chat bubble, which can then be opened over any application running at the first time. plan. For chat and text messaging apps like Hangouts, it's a nice clutch function.
Finally, let me finish with Bixby. I do not like it and I do not like the fact that there is a dedicated hardware button to access it. To combat it, I use an application called BixAssist, which allows me to set a Google Assistant shortcut from the dedicated Bixby hardware key. Samsung does not allow this type of purchase without the use of an application, which is total stupidity on the part of Samsung. But what are you going to do?
Performance
This phone is eye-catching, yo! With the Snapdragon 855 processor and 8GB of RAM (you can go up to 12GB), it's probably one of the most vivid phones you can find right now. For me, performance is a big problem for all the mobile games I participate in. Whether it's classics like Whale Trail or a slower space adventure like Out There, my phone has always felt incredibly fast during my tasks.
And let's say I get out of these games quickly and I'm in Chrome or I open my camera. I never came across a jank or a crush that let me wait for the phone to react to my inputs. It's a real pleasure to use and it's always the case when a phone has excellent responsiveness.
Drums
With a battery of 4,100 mAh, this phone basically shows what I thought. Every day, I go easily to more than 4 hours of screen, almost 5 hours, which is very good for me. I'm mostly connected to WiFi all day, but that's because my house is a black hole for AT & T and T-Mobile services. However, by making up for my use of Wi-Fi using the camera and playing a lot, the fact that I easily spent whole days with screen hours on the screen suits me perfectly.
Somewhere in the middle
Camera
The three rear-facing cameras and two front-facing cameras are the only things that concern me with this phone. To be honest, I expected to be blown away by almost every shot I took, but unfortunately, that was not always the case. Do not get me wrong, this phone takes amazing pictures, but if you find yourself in non-ideal shooting situations, which can often be the case, you will be disappointed.
Now, in general, I would not give a phone too hard if it could not take great pictures in low light, but Google completely climbs the bar with Night Sight, not having a mode of making in low light on the Galaxy S10. and S10 +, which starts at $ 999, is a serious disappointment. What Samsung gives us is the Scene Optimizer, which automatically detects if you are in a dark environment. When he notices this, he takes a burst of pictures and then compiles them into a single image, with what should be a decent lighting. Unfortunately, this usually looks like a muddy mess.
Scene Optimizer will also recognize if the phone has been placed on a tripod. When done and in low light, the camera takes even more pictures to compile into one shot. These results are better, but that means you will have to carry your tripod if you plan to shoot at night. Compare that to Night Sight on the Pixel and you can only laugh at Google's progress in the category of low-light mobile photography. I have some low light examples below. This same performance in low light is also visible on the front cameras. It's embarrassing, I recently had a birthday and after boasting the fact that my Galaxy S10 + could probably take a better group shot in front of my brother's Pixel 2, I got the results you'll see here. below. The photos are completely unusable. We ended up taking over the groufie with the Pixel 2 and the plans were a night / day difference. Come on, Samsung!
When you have good lighting, the Galaxy S10 and its set of cameras shine. I notice that the purple ones look amazing, as well as the greens. In good lighting, contrasts and details are exceptional. The addition of the ultra-wide lens is also very useful. I love this thing. It's ideal for photographing landscapes or capturing more context for a given photo. Honestly, I would say to Samsung to give up the telephoto lens that I had used so little and to give me a standard lens and a very wide angle, and to invest more in low light mode development. Then we will be in business.
The following photos have been resized, but no other changes have been made.
Look at this poor excuse of a selfie.

Other notes
- Sound – The Galaxy S10 + is equipped with stereo speakers that sound great. They are also quite noisy, which is impressive given the small size of the speaker above the device. Samsung has done a good job on audio with this phone, especially with the inclusion of Dolby Atmos optimizations.
- Girlfriend impressions – "Oh, it's really heavy, but we feel premium. The fingerprint reader is cool. Three cameras? The Pixel is only one? It's great. The display is really nice and I like the cut. "
- Ultrasonic fingerprint reader – I did not find it necessary to dedicate an entire section to a fingerprint reader, so I'll just say that I love it. It's extremely fast, works even if your fingers are wet and does not require a huge light to be able to shine. OnePlus, use this technology instead of your optical drive, please.
Price and availability
This is not a cheap phone. My model, the storage model of 8GB RAM + 512GB ceramic white, costs $ 1249. For the 12 GB + 1 TB option, you expect 1599 USD. Ouch! However, if you just want one entry level Galaxy S10 +, the price is $ 999, which still has 128GB of storage. It does not seem like a bad deal, but it may be because people are spending a lot more on the phone than before. Of course, a standard Galaxy S10 starts at $ 899, which is also tempting. If you do not have the S10 +, you will not notice anything: a larger screen with less IPP, a larger battery and a depth-sensing camera pointing to the front. Everything else is basically the same.

The verdict
If anyone wondered what phone he should buy now, I should use the Galaxy S10 or S10 +. My only real concern, not to mention the slight hiccups I encountered, would be the updates. Samsung did a pretty decent job of updating the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 9 to Pie, but it could be even better. If you like the latest version of Android, I recommend a pixel. However, this phone is too nice not to recommend. The material is superb, the cameras are very good in the right conditions and the Samsung software is now cool to use.
I can not think of a better device that Samsung could have created on its tenth birthday, because this phone sets the bar for 2019 and beyond.
