UMass men's hockey defenseman and Cale Makar, winner of the Hobey Baker Award, signed Sunday a three-year entry agreement with the Colorado Avalanche. He will immediately join Avalanche, who is in the middle of the playoff heat of the first round of the Western Conference with the Calgary Flames. The third game of the series will take place Monday night in Colorado.

Makar, 20, was born in Calgary and led UMass to his first participation in the Division 1 National Championship in the history of the program, during which the Minutemen were beaten 3-0 by Minnesota-Duluth on Saturday. Makar totaled 16-33–49 in his second season at UMass and 21-49–70 in two seasons on the program. He was selected by Avalanche with the fourth overall pick in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft, the highest selection of a UMass player.
