Make walking more bearable with the Apple Fitness series from Dolly Parton

I hate walking a lot less than running, but nothing is more exciting than spending an hour outside in boredom BLA bla from the suburbs. Give me hills, trails, water – anything but asphalt, and pass six different Starbucks on three blocks. And while Apple can’t grow lush trees and landscapes from scratch, the company’s new “Time to Walk” audio stories at least reduce the monotony.

I’ll cut out the bad news first: These audio stories, meant to accompany your walk like your favorite band or podcast, are exclusive to Apple’s Fitness + service. So you’re not going to hear Dolly Parton soothe your exercise-weary self with sparkly stories unless you pay $ 10 / month (or $ 80 / year). Or, unless you subscribe to her award winning podcast, which I fully approve.

It’s not fair the queen of the country who appears in the new series “Time to Walk” from Apple. You’ll also find stories from Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green, musician Shawn Mendes, and actress Uzo Aduba. Nothing against those three, but I’m not sure anything could capture the squeaky, sometimes scruffy, always-enthusiastic style of conversation of Dolly.

To view any of these audio stories, strap on your Apple Watch (a requirement) and pull up Aptitude app on your iPhone or iPad. Scroll down to the new Time to Walk section:

Tap a person and you will see the option to add their Time to Walk episode to your Apple Watch:

Each of these episodes is a mix of music and chatter – some roughly 50-50, others heavier on chatter than the music (which tends to be just three songs). Once the transfer to your watch is complete, you will no longer be able to initiate it via your iPhone or iPad. Instead, you’ll go to the Workout app on your Apple Watch, where you’ll see your Time to Walk episodes listed among your usual fitness routines:

Oddly enough, the audio narration didn’t start right from the start of my walking training; I had to swipe to the left, which showed the usual musical controls. It could also be a quirk of my AirPods Pro connection, which has been difficult lately; so, if you don’t hear anything at first, be aware that you may have to start the Time to Walk episode yourself.

Other than that, sit back and enjoy the mini monologue. Apple will release a new Time to Walk episode every week on Mondays from now until the end of April. This will give you plenty of time to find the next big distraction you need to maintain your healthy habits.
