ALPENA – Pack the tissues and possibly an adult diaper, because this piece is hilarious and heartbreaking.
“Sandy Toes and Salty Kisses” opens at 7:30 pm tonight at the Civic Theater of Alpena.
This is the first live play in Alpena since the world closed in March 2020. They were actually rehearsing at that time to do this play in the spring of 2020, but obviously that didn’t happen.
Well, they got back to it, and this talented and experienced cast is ready to see how much you can laugh.
The comedy stars Matt Southwell as Uncle Bubba, Julie Meyers as Beatrice Rutherford Smythe, Zach Clements as Douglas Dupont, Diane Lozen as Audrina Brown, Tracie Papin as Candy, Curt Hampton as Peter Mudd and Mia Hauff as Traci Rutherford Smythe.
If you think shenanigans are funny to begin with, wait until you see the likes of the highly talented and highly sought after Madame Coco. If she doesn’t crack you up, you must have fallen asleep somehow, which would be next to impossible during this fast-paced, fun production.
Written by Michael Parker and Susan Parker, the play takes place in a mystical seaside resort where love is in the air. A couple are planning to get married, but the future mother-in-law is not really excited about the choice of a spouse for her daughter. Lots of accidents and multiple shenanigans happen one after another to make this an energetic non-stop journey through a crazy tunnel of love, lust, mystery and mistrust.
There are a few sexual innuendos, but most of them would probably stick out of a child’s head, so this piece is recommended for all ages. There is no curse.
Director Scott Edgar and assistant director Ted Rockwell couldn’t say enough about the cast.
He said “lots of laughs” are in store for the audience.
“It’s just one laugh after another, because it all goes wild,” Edgar said. “It’s just endless chaos, because the rooms are lit, people don’t realize there were mistakes.”
“This cast has been working on this for two years,” added Edgar.
“This cast is awesome,” said Rockwell.
Edgar and Rockwell agreed it was “awesome” to be able to open up to the public again.
While they were closed, the Alpena Civic Theater had a new air filtration system installed, and returning customers will notice the difference. The basement has no musty smell and no dust can be seen dancing under the floodlights of the theater itself. You can definitely tell that the air is cleaner, and this system is used in hospitals to remove viruses, including the coronavirus, which causes COVID-19.
“We’re so excited for people to finally come out and have fun,” said Edgar. “This COVID affair has been a nightmare for everyone. So get people out and let them laugh and have a good time and forget about that for now – my job as a director is to transport people to another time, another place. “
He said everyone would probably need a vacation, and why leave town when you can just hit the beach for “Sandy Toes and Salty Kisses”?
This show takes place at 7:30 p.m. this evening, Friday and Saturday, with a morning at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, and again the following week at 7:30 p.m. on September 30, October 1 and 2, with a morning at 2:00 p.m. Sunday October 3. Call the box office at 989-354-3624 to reserve.
