KUALA LUMPUR: Up to 249 people were identified as assistant protection officers as provided by the Child (Amendment) Act 2016, said Dr. Wan Azizah Wan Ismail Datuk Seri. Officers have been chosen from the community that is able to meet the criteria set out in the Act.
The selection was made at the state welfare department level, she said. She said in her speech at the launch of the program of the campaign for child safety here yesterday
Dr. Wan Azizah said that the Department of Social Welfare was the first to intervene in the fight against child abuse, neglect and protection of children. The goal was to ensure that Welfare Officers rescue children at risk or abandoned or neglected children in each of the officer's communities.
She said that the Children's Act covered various aspects of child protection, preservation and participation that preserve the well-being and rights of children.
Dr. Wan Azizah stated that the implementation of the protection system was shared between the protection officer, the doctors, the police, the parents and the public.
In an interview, Mohd Fazari Mohd Salleh, director general of the Department of Social Welfare, said that the 249 identified people had been cleared by the police and that the Insolvency Department was now calling them
He said that after the process, the approved names would be published in the Gazette.
He said the protection assistants would assist the protection officers, who were about 400 at present, he said.
