KOTA SAMARAHAN: A total of 407 graduates from Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) received their Ph.D. and Master's degrees during the first session of the 22nd University Convocation Ceremony held here yesterday. .
Of these, 250 are from Sarawak and the rest from Peninsular Malaysia.
Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak Pehin Tun, Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, also Chancellor of Unimas, officiated at the ceremony and handed the reels to the graduates.
The convocation must be spread over five sessions, during which 4,103 students will receive their manuscripts.
The remaining four sessions will be spread throughout the day and will include undergraduate graduates.
This year's graduates include 83 international students from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Brunei, China, Indonesia, South Korea, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Tajikistan, Turkey, from Ghana, India, Iraq, Libya, Nigeria and the United States.
Yesterday, at the ceremony, the chief minister of the Unimas Republic, Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg, received an "honorary doctorate in economic development".
Dr. Mohamad Kadim Suaidi, Vice Chancellor of Unimas, said that since the appointment of Mr. Abang Johari as Chief Minister, he has made a decisive commitment to the development of the Sarawak economy. in the interest of the population.
At the same time, he said that Unimas, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary of the Silver Jubilee, has enjoyed national and international successes since 1992.
"I am convinced that the success we have today is the result of the commitment and support of all our university staff to bring the Unimas brand to the world.
"As the eighth public university in Malaysia, Unimas has created a history in the country this year, when it was crowned one of the top 1,001 best universities in the world.

Unimas is now among the top 10. The most proud moment of Unimas is to become the first university in Borneo to be in the world ranking of universities, "he said.
Unimas and Fusionex Sarawak Sdn Bhd announced the creation of the Fusionex-Unimas research grant.
This means that both sides intend to strengthen their efforts on big data and artificial intelligence; thereby supporting the Sarawak Government's Digital Economy Initiative.
Fusionex is an established provider of data technologies specializing in analytics, big data, artificial intelligence and machine learning.
The organization aims to help customers capture, store, process, analyze and make sense of vast amounts of structured and unstructured data.
The creation of the Fusionex-Unimas research grant aims to conduct research
projects, nurture the talents of Unimas and promote industry-related research projects in Sarawak.
To begin the research grant, Fusionex provided RM300,000 for collaborative efforts in the areas of research, publications, marketing, intellectual property, and teaching and learning.
