BUKIT KAYU HITAM: A 57-year-old former soldier was arrested by the Border Security Agency (Aksem) for trying to smuggle 65 live pangolins worth RM 75,000.
Aksem Area Commander, Superintendent Mohd Khairi Abdullah, stated that his team had stopped a car while she was heading to the Immigration Complex, Customs, quarantine and security (ICQS) around 10am yesterday. "He told us that he had picked up the animals, each weighing between 3 and 10 kg, from a man in Jitra and that he had been paid 1,800 RM for the trip
. "The suspect does not have a criminal record but we believe that he has made many such trips to bring pangolins to Thailand," said ASP Mohd Khairi.
A kilo of pangolin meat can go up to RM 250 while animal scales, used for various diseases, can reach RM 20,000 per kilo
"The case was transmitted at the Kedah Wildlife Department for "All species of the pangolin family are threatened and protected by national and international laws."
