SHAH ALAM • Three candidates will run in a Selangor by-election next month, in a battle that analysts say will reveal whether the new Umno ruling party or the new Pakatan Harapan (PH) administration has more than weight with Malay voters
Sungai Kandis vote on Aug. 4 is closely watched as it will be the first by-election since Barisan Nasional (BN), led by Umno, was ousted in the May 9 general election.
51,230 registered voters, including 72% of Malays, 16% of Indians and 12% of Chinese.
BN Representative in the polls, Datuk Lokman Noor Adam, member of the Supreme Council of Umno decision. Mr. Lokman was also the Director of Strategic Communications of the Ministry of Finance
Pakatan Harapan Dispatch Mr. Mohd Zawawi Ahmad Mughni, Director of an Islamic School and Secretary of the Office of Understanding and Consolidating Religions of the Party Keadilan Rakyat (PKR). 19659002] PKR is the main party of the ruling coalition PH
M. Lokman and Zawawi and independent candidate Murthi Krishnasamy presented their nomination papers yesterday.
The by-election was triggered following the death of PKR MP Shuhaimi Shafiei on July 2 because of a lymphoma
M. Mat Shuhaimi defended his seat in the May 9 general election with a majority of 12,480 votes in a four-corner fight.
He voted 23 998 votes, or 55.6 percent of the 43 165 votes validly cast. Candidate Umno-BN received 11,518 votes, representing 26.7% of valid votes.
BN must retain, or improve, his percentage of votes received to claim that the majority of Malays remain firmly behind her while she is trying to regroup As an opposition party
With the Islamist Party Party Islam SeMalaysia (PAS), not participating in the contest and its leaders openly declaring that he would work with Umno, Mr. Lokman could win some of the votes of PAS
