Microsoft announced today the winning team for its Imagine Cup 2018 competition, presenting the first prize to a Canadian team called smartARM. Originally from Canada, the student team has created a robotic prosthetic hand that can recognize objects and determine the best way to grasp them.
The smartARM prosthesis combines a camera with Microsoft Azure Computer Vision, machine learning and cloud storage to achieve its goal. As winners, smartARM will receive $ 85,000 in cash, a $ 50,000 Azure grant and a mentorship session with Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft.
Aside from smartARM, this year's contest featured other innovative projects. In second place, a Greek team called iCry2Talk has developed an interface that translates a baby's cry into a specific physiological and psychological state. The result is then communicated in a text message, image and voice message. Meanwhile, a Japanese team called Mediated Ear took third place with a project to help hearing-impaired people focus on a single interlocutor in a multi-conversation environment.
This marks the sixteenth year of the Microsoft Imagine Cup competition. he has presented entries of tens of thousands of students around the world. Finally, after national and regional competitions, 49 teams from 33 countries participated in the World Finals.
