MP for Pasir Gudang released on three charges of sedition

SHAH ALAM : The Tribunal of Sessions today granted a discharge which does not constitute an acquittal to Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Abdul Karim for three charges of sedition on his Twitter account.

Judge Datuk Ahmad Zamzani Mohd Zain made the decision after the Deputy Prosecutor Naliatul Huzaimi Ab Rasip informed the court that the prosecution was withdrawing all charges against Hassan, 67.

Naliatul Huzaimi said that this followed a statement by the defense and was accepted by the Attorney General (AG).

representing Hassan, urged the court to grant an outright acquittal for his client since the Attorney General had accepted their representation.

Hassan was charged with three counts of sedition over tweets that criticized the Selangor Sultan during the Selangor Menteri Besar Crisis in 2014.

Two of the charges related to tweets on his Twitter account, @ Hakarim51, and the third on @zunarkartunis' Twitter account

The charges were laid under section 4 (1) (c) of the Sedition Act 1948.

He had also sought trial of three counts of Charge under section 233 (1) (a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act of 1998 on tweets for deliberately using the facility of the network to transmit a communication to annoy others.

The prosecution had called two witnesses when the defense sent a representation to the AG. – Bernama
