Lewis Hamilton wins the Hungarian Grand Prix after a controlled and dominant race in which his Mercedes team takes advantage of their advantage after starting from pole.

In hot, dry weather, Sebastian Vettel won second place by beating Valtteri Bottas with five laps to go. Bottas suffered damage when Vettel passed and could only finish in fifth place. Kimi Raikkonen finished in third place, which is no small feat since he had to finish the race, which took place at 33c, with his bottle disconnected and therefore unable to take the less liquid

lead on the German in the world championship.

Daniel Ricciardo put in another performance in Hungary and came superbly on the field to take fourth place from the 12th on the grid. He bore a shot of tires with Marcus Ericsson in the first lap that dropped him in the 16th and also hit when he passed Bottas on lap 68. His teammate of Red Bull Max Verstappen, however, was furious with retire from the fifth with another Renault engine failure.

This is Hamilton's sixth victory at the Hungarian Grand Prix and he is the most successful driver of the race. This means that he has won exactly half of the matches that he has played here, a remarkable feat, even though he has never won the title after winning in Hungary. No driver has won the championship after winning the championship since Michael Schumacher in 2004, a trend that the British driver is well placed to win the victory.

But what matters most will be to win the victory against all odds. circuit where Mercedes was waiting to fight. Hamilton made a superb lap to take pole position in the pouring rain on Saturday, but in hot weather that dominated the weekend, the Mercedes was third behind Ferrari and Red Bull. After winning a brace on the grid, the Hamilton team exploited it and the difficulty of overtaking at Hungaroring, at most to take what appeared to be at the opening of the weekend, is an unlikely victory.

This 67th career win is his fifth of the season, one more than Vettel and has, returning after the win in Germany, gave him a major advantage in the title fight. He now has a lead that is almost more than a DNF on Vettel and is entering the F1 summer holidays having put the German under tremendous pressure. The head has changed hands six times between the two this season, but that's the biggest gap that has been maintained in the 12 races up here.

Mercedes succeeded on a track where the proliferation of slow to medium turns did not hold. their car will be considered an additional bonus, especially with the forthcoming Spa and Monza power circuits.

Hamilton and Bottas made a nice breakaway in first and second place, but Vettel cashed a spot Raikkonen bypassed the outside of the second corner to take third place. Behind them, Verstappen shot well and finished fifth in seventh place in the first round.

Hamilton quickly opened a gap, with three seconds on Bottas in the fourth lap and with Mercedes having achieved their goal of tracking their position ahead of the Ferrari on race control. By passing exceptionally strong, Bottas was able to bottle Vettel and Raikkonen while Hamilton was five seconds ahead. Ferrari responded to lap 15 and Mercedes responded a lap later, giving Vettel clean air and the opportunity to push Hamilton.

Vettel reduced the gap to 6.5 seconds four laps later, with Vettel, who had started with hard and hard rubber remaining on the outside and leading the race. His intention to go far and try to pass Hamilton using the fastest ultrasofts at the end of the race.

This led to a median period when the four leading riders respected their plans, but especially Vettel was faster than Bottas and Raikkonen giving him the chance to get out in front of them both when he finally stopped. However, he lost time in the traffic and when he stung on the 39th lap, the stop was slow – 4.5sec, after a problem with the left front – and he emerged behind Bottas

Ferrari's bet had not borne fruit. A faster rubber would have no impact on Bottas which quickly removed from the DRS range. Hamilton, now back in the lead, had a gap of 8s in front but the German finally had the advantage over Bottas and made his turn outside the second corner at 65th lap, which concluded with the Finn trying to get back to him and taking damage to his front wing. The British pilot was in serene control on the outside and he won by 17sec de Vettel.

Fernando Alonso managed to go home in eighth place for McLaren for his 37th birthday. Peter Gasly's Toro Rosso was sixth; Kevin Magnussen in the Haas was seventh, with his teammate Romain Grosjean 10th; Carlos Sainz in the Renault was ninth.
