Triumph Motorcycles has released details on a pair of 1,200cc scramblers: the 2019 Scrambler 1200 XC and Scrambler 1200 XE. Claiming they are benchmark-setting motorcycles that combine adventure motorcycle capability with scrambler style, Triumph says these new models are “the real deal.” Both models are meant for on-road and off-road duty, with the XC being an all-rounder and the XE packing more off-road chops.
Powered by Triumph’s 1,200cc Bonneville twin, both models share the same state of tune, putting out a claimed 88.7 hp at 7,400 rpm with 88.1 pound-feet of torque at 3,950 rpm. This is 38 percent more horsepower and torque than the Street Scrambler and 12 percent more horsepower than the Bonneville T120. Five ride modes are standard, with a sixth, Off-Road Pro, on the XE model. Off-Road Pro turns off the traction control and ABS while using off-road engine mapping.
Fitted with an IMU, the XE model also features cornering traction control and cornering ABS. Twin Brembo M50 radial Monoblock calipers squeeze 320mm front discs while a 255mm rear disc is matched to a twin-piston caliper.
Suspension duties are provided by dual fully adjustable, twin spring Öhlins shocks and a 45mm inverted fork that is also fully adjustable. On the XC, 200mm (7.9 inches) of travel is provided, while on the XE the travel is 50mm longer at 250mm (9.8 inches), front and rear. The XE has a 32mm-longer aluminum swingarm than the XC.
While the styling, suspension, and engine details are impressive, the technology and user features raise the bar for Triumph and scramblers in general. Keyless ignition, heated grips, cruise control, and USB charging are features expected in an adventure motorcycle, but the Scrambler 1200 now brings them to a segment that traditionally has forgone such luxuries. A world’s-first integrated GoPro control system connects via the TFT dash and an accessory Bluetooth module and allows camera control via the switch gear on the left bar end. An industry-first partnership with Google provides turn-by-turn navigation by Google Maps via an accessory Bluetooth module and a Triumph smartphone app. Finally, phone calls and music can be controlled on the TFT dash with the Bluetooth as well.
Triumph also plans to field a Scrambler XE in the 2018 Baja 1000 with stunt rider and desert-racer Ernie Vigil. A bold statement of the new Scrambler 1200’s capability for sure.
