2019 Ford Ranger class launched in Malaysia with new 2.0 Bi-Turbo engine and 10-speed auto

Sime Darby Auto Connection (SDAC) has officially launched the 2019 Ford Ranger facelift range in Malaysia – it's the second refresh for the T6, the first being back in 2015, but this revision looks to be more comprehensive, introducing a new powertrain and transmission part of its package update.

The local Ranger line-up will consist of four core models – four being high rider regulation units, the XL, XLT, Wildtrak and a new XLT + variant, as well as the Ranger Raptor, which will be launched at KLIMS 2018 but is being previewed at the Ranger launch.

Variant-wise, the baseline unit is the single-cab 2.2L XL Manual, and this is followed by the 2.2L XL Manual and Automatic in dual-cab form. Next up are the 2.2L Manual and Auto XLT, which are better equipped versions.

Both the XL and XLT are equipped with the 2.2L TDCi VGT Puma engine, which offers 160 PS and 385 Nm of torque from 1,600 to 2,600 rpm. The unit is new to the XL, which has been equipped with non-VGT 123 hp and 370 Nm 2.2 liter. No change in transmission options, the options being a six-speed Getrag manual MT82 manual 6R80 gearbox.

The mechanical buzz starts with the XLT +, which is the only one Wildtrak / Raptor variant to get the automaker's new EcoBlue mill. The Panther is available in two different states of tune – on the XLT +, it's seen in 2.0L's Turbo-Turbo single form, where it pushes out 180 PS and 420 Nm of torque from 1,750 to 2,500 rpm. The XLT + is only available in automatic, and here, the new engine also gets a fresh partnering transmission, has a Ford 10R80 10-speed automatic gearbox with SelectShift manual override.

Next is the Wildtrak, which drops the 3.2 liter previously seen up to the first facelift. The Wildtrak comes with two options. The first is a 2.0L Wildtrak 4 × 2, equipped with the above-mentioned 2.0L Si-Turbo engine. It also features rear-wheel drive, and is the only version in the entire model line-up to have that configuration.

The top model in the standard range is the 2.0L Wildtrak 4 × 4, which gets the EcoBlue Bi-Turbo unit. Here, the unit offers 213 PS and 500 Nm of torque from 1,750 to 2,000 rpm. Again, only a single transmission choice, the 10-speed auto. In total, Ranger Raptor aside, there are eight variants with two engines (and three outputs) in the standard line-up.

Kit-wise, the 2018 Ranger facelift new products to the truck segment – it's the first in class to offer forward collision warnings (audible warning, pre-charges the brakes and prepared brake assist), autonomous emergency braking (AEB detects pedestrians vehicles in front, will auto brake if no action is taken), lane departure warning and adaptive cruise control.

Also unique to the class are semi-automatic parallel parking (scans for spots, steers itself), though all these are only available in the Wildtrak 2.0L 4 × 4. Elsewhere, the Ranger also comes with an Easy Lift Tailgate, which incorporates a twisting bar to make lifting and lowering the tailgate easier. The feature is available from the XLT +.

In terms of standard equipment, the Ranger XL comes with halogen complex reflector headlamps, front and rear fog lamps, cruise control, cargo LED light, manual air-conditioning, 16-inch wheels, SYNC 1 infotainment system with a 4.2-inch screen and speakers, among other things.

The headlamps, auto rain-sensing wipers, premium fabric seats, auto-dimming rearview mirrors, leather-wrapped steering wheel, sports bar, two additional speakers to the audio system 17-inch units.

The XLT is where the jump in equipment really starts. This one gets automatic HID projector headlamps with LED daytime running lights, the Easy Lift tailgate, dual-zone auto air-conditioning, leather seats, keyless entry / push start, Ford MyKey, dual oven-inch screens in the instrument panel a SYNC 3 system with an eight-inch touch screen, Bluetooth, voice control, navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It also bumps up the wheel size to 18-inches.

The Wildtrak, from its specific exterior styling cues, adds on the 4 × 2 variant Wildtrak premium leather seats, LED front foglamps, has 230V AC power outlet in the cabin, has 12V socket in the cargo bed, front parking sensors, year e-locking differential, a cooled console and power-adjustable driver's seat.

Safety-wise, the Ranger comes with two airbags, ABS, EBD, ESC as standard across the range, with the Wildtraks adding on side and curtain airbags to make it six (plus the active safety suite on the top 4 × 4). As for body colors, the XLs can be had in Cool White, Meteor Gray and Aluminum Metallic.

The latter is also on the XLT color list, along with Lightning Blue, Frozen White, Magnetic and Absolute Black. The Wildtraks, meanwhile, are available in the three colors, plus a signature Saber orange shade.

Pricing of the Ranger XL starts from RM90,888, while that of the XLT begins from RM109,888. The sole XLT + is priced at RM124,888, while Wildtrak pricing begins from RM134,888. At the launch, SDAC announced that all new Ranger customers who register their vehicle before January 31, 2019 will get a two-year or 40,000 km free maintenance package. It added that the first 888 buyers who register their Ranger – up to December 31 – will receive an electrical voucher worth RM1,000.
