Lionel Messi: Barcelona issue statement on star’s injury, two players helping recovery | Football | Sport

Lionel Messi was taken off in the first half of Barcelona’s 4-2 win over Sevilla earlier this month after landing awkwardly on his arm.

The Argentine missed Barcelona’s Champions League clash against Inter Milan as well as the El Clasico on Sunday.

Barcelona initially confirmed the forward would be out for around three weeks.

And it seems the five-time Ballon d’Or winner is recovering well with Barcelona confirming his return to training this morning.

Ernesto Valverde’s side take on Cultural Leonesa in the Copa del Rey this evening but that fixture has come too soon for Messi.

Gerard Pique and Jordi Alba have also been helping the star in his comeback after they were rested for the trip to Leon.

“Eleven days on from his injury against Sevilla, Leo Messi was back training on Wednesday morning,” a club statement read.

“The Argentinean returned to Pitch 2 of the Ciutat Esportiva for mobility work, after a few days out.

“Messi worked out alongside Gerard Piqué and Jordi Alba, two of the players that coach Ernesto Valverde had given the day off.

“The defensive duo were not included in the squad for the trip to Leon, where FC Barcelona will play Cultural Leonesa in the Copa del Rey Round of 32.”

Coach Ernesto Valverde will check Messi’s fitness before deciding whether to bring him back for Saturday’s league game at Rayo Vallecano.

Valverde could delay his return until next Tuesday when Barcelona travel to the San Siro to face Inter in the Champions League.

Messi had been in great goalscoring form prior to the injury scoring 12 goals in 12 games in all competitions.

Barcelona sit top of La Liga following their convincing 5-1 win over Real Madrid on Saturday.

With Messi absent, Luis Suarez stepped up to the plate, scoring a hat-trick at the Nou Camp.

The result plunged Julen Lopetegui’s job into major doubt and he was sacked by club president Florentino Perez just over 24 hours after the game.
