Srinagar: The director of the Srinagar airport has assured that it will not be necessary. This meeting was held at Farooq Abdullah, Srinagar airport, and was chaired by Farooq Abdullah. The Deputy Commissioner Budgam and leaders of trade and tourism organizations also participated in the meeting.
Director of Srinagar airport Akash Deep Mathur informed in the meeting that AirAsia has shown interest in operating direct flights from Kuala Lumpur to Srinagar. He said that the government is considering giving the go-ahead to the airlines.
Mathur also informed that a baggage collection center would be set up in the city where travelers can check in their baggage and proceed to the airport.
"Work on the Kargil airport is in the final stages and the airport will be made operational soon," said Mathur in the meeting.
For operation of international flights, Mathur said, a new terminal was being constructed for which shuttle services will be run by airlines.
President of J & K Hotel and Restaurant Association (JKHARA) Showkat M Chowdhary urged the airport authorities to increase the frequency of flights between Srinagar and Jammu in the face of the frequent road closures and heavy rush on the highway during winter months. He also suggested widening the road leading to the airport so that travelers do not get stuck in traffic jams.
Chowshary requested that local vendors should be given a chance to have shops where Kashmiri art and craft could be sold.
The meeting was also attended by presidents of KCCI, TASK, TAAK, and KHAROF.
The JKHARA delegation included its general Secretary Adil Khan and joint secretary Shahjahan.
