BERLIN: Bundesliga leader Borussia Dortmund defeated VfL Wolfsburg 1-0 with captain Marco Reus' sixth goal of the season, four ahead of Bayern Munich on Saturday.
Dortmund, undefeated for 15 games in all competitions this season and with his best start in decades, had to work hard against the Wolves after Reus nodded in the 26th minute.
The result earned them 24 points, ahead of Bayern, second, who was held 1-1 at home by Friborg. This victory also allowed Lucien Favre to become the most successful new coach in Dortmund history after being undefeated for 15 matches since his victory this season.
The Swiss coach made nine changes to the team that beat Union Berlin in overtime in the German Cup midweek, including giving Paco Alcacer his best start.
In an entertaining match, both teams had their chances, but Dortmund could have added another goal thanks to their skipper Reus or Jacob Bruun Larsen to avoid a nervous final.
"We defended very well as a team and could have scored more goals," said Dortmund defender Manuel Akanji. "But we obviously can not score three or four goals in every game. We are now turning to Atletico and the Champions League. "
Dortmund, who could book his place in the last 16 of the Champions League at Atlético Madrid on Tuesday, will host Bayern in the Bundesliga next week.
German striker Timo Werner scored twice in RB Leipzig's 3-0 win against Hertha Berlin, which propelled him to third place, one point behind Bayern. Leipzig drew 0-0 in its last two games.
Hoffenheim smashed Bayer Leverkusen 4-1 to sixth in 16, while Schalke 04 earned their first victory in three games with a 3-1 victory over Hannover 96, which put more distance between Königsblauen, 13th, and the relegation zone.
