KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama): The government is determining the most appropriate method for identifying valid owners of social media accounts in the country, said Minister of Communications and Multimedia, Gobind Singh Deo.
He said the mechanism was crucial to ensure that the social media accounts held by the ministry and government agencies were valid and not subject to abuse.
"We are now going to look at a method (approach) where we can confirm the names used in social media, and people frequently consult accounts available on social media and think that they are the official website of the relevant ministry or agencies.

Gobind commented on a reporter's question about the government's solution for invalid accounts using the name or representing government departments and agencies.
Expressing more in-depth, Mr. Gobind said that the case had become one of the government's concerns and that the department had identified two categories of illegal accounts on social media that needed to be addressed .
"Two categories are under study. One, the unofficial handle name (account owner). This has allowed many parties to use and act in a variety of areas.
"In the second category, we (the department) found that there are many social media accounts on which people make various comments anonymously," he said.
In another development, Gobind Singh denied the tax on streaming music and video streaming services, including Netflix, which restricted the right of people to entertainment.
The tax was imposed not as a restriction, but on the basis of a detailed study by the Ministry of Finance, he said.
