Singapore will abide by Malaysia's decision to abolish motorcycle tolls next year at the Tuas Second Link, the Ministry of Transportation (MOT) announced yesterday.

A MOT spokesperson told the Straits Times that the ministry had taken note of Malaysia's plans to remove tolls for motorcyclists at Second Link starting Jan. 1.

"If Malaysia reduces or removes the toll charges for Second Link bikes, Singapore would match Malaysia's revised toll rates," the spokesman said.

Last Friday, Pakistan's new Pakatan Harapan government revealed in its budget for 2019 that motorcyclists would get free passage on both Penang bridges and the second link to Singapore.

Currently, they pay RM1.10 (35 cents Singapore) on the Malaysian side of the Second Link and 40 cents on the Tuas checkpoint.

The Malaysian newspaper The Star reported on Saturday that Johor hoped Singapore would return the favor.

"We believe that the Singaporean government will do the same, for example when the tolls of the Eastern Dispersal Link near Johor Causeway were removed," said Jimmy Puah Wee Tse, chairman of the Committee on International Trade, Investment and Public Services , quoted in The Star.

In its response yesterday, MOT stated that Singapore's long-standing policy was to match Malaysia's toll rates.

"This reflects the shared nature of the second link," said the ministry spokesman.
