A major international online sports club has officially overthrown an Israeli member of its team for an upcoming tournament in Kuala Lumpur.
Ninjas in pajamas based in Sweden have qualified for the million dollars Kuala Lumpur Major Dota 2 tournament with the Israeli national Neta Shapira, nicknamed "33", as part of their five-member team.
In a statement released today, team captain, Peter Dager, or "PPD," said that the team had recruited Shapira in September, unaware that Valve – the video game developer based in Seattle Dota 2, and organizer of its most prestigious series of tournaments – would choose Malaysia as the venue of the future tournament.
"As soon as the announcement of the first major visit to Malaysia, we were very concerned about Shapira's ability to obtain a visa.
"I do not know all the details, but according to what has been said, Malaysia does not like Israel very much," he said.
Dager added that his club had contacted the tournament organizer and Valve to no avail.
The Ninjas in Pajamas have since found a temporary replacement for Shapira who will participate in the tournament which will begin on November 9 at KLCC.
However, Valve will impose a 40% penalty on team league points for using a substitute.
Malaysia has no diplomatic ties with Israel and is in the habit of denying Israeli athletes international sports competitions.
There have been some exemptions, like the English football club Chelsea Yossi Benayoun in an exhibition match against Malaysia in 2011, and when a group of Israeli diplomats went to Kuala Lumpur for a UN conference in February.
Shapira is not the only Israeli national to be involved in the Kuala Lumpur Major.
The American training of Evil Geniuses, one of the most decorated multi-disciplinary electronic sports clubs in the world, is commissioned by the Israeli national Tal & # 39; Fly & # 39; Aizik.
The visa status of Aizik for the tournament has not yet been revealed.
