GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Islamic Religious Council, the Department of Public Education and the police are investigating allegations that Bibles were distributed to students in front of a secondary school in Bukit Mertajam.

Ahmad Zakiyuddin Abdul Rahman, Deputy Chief Minister of Penang, said the state government was leaving the authorities responsible to get to the bottom of things.

"I want to reiterate that Islam is the official religion of the state of Penang, as it is inscribed in the state constitution. Any attempt to undermine racial and religious harmony in a multiracial and multireligious society will not be tolerated, "he said in a statement released today.

Yesterday Minister of the Prime Minister Mujahid Yusof Rawa, head of Islamic affairs, admitted that these statements were true.

The proselytization of Muslims is banned in the country.
