PUTRAJAYA: Former Attorney General Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail may have had his own reasons for not charging former Sabah chief minister Tan Sri Musa Aman for corruption, says Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
The Prime Minister said the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) should also explain why no prosecution over the case.
“There must be a reason for it, I think the matter is not fully understood and I think will we seek some clarification what the actual situation was at that time.
“Even if he (Abdul Gani) explains it or not, other parties such as the MACC must explain why in those days there was no prosecution (against Musa),” said Dr Mahathir at a press conference after attending the launch of ‘Gold Note of Hope’ by Poh Kong on Thursday (Nov 8).
He was asked to comment on Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng’s statement that Abdul Gani must explain why Musa was not charged for corruption in 2012.
On Monday (Nov 5), Musa was slapped with 35 counts of corruption after he it was alleged that he received up to RM253mil in kickbacks related to logging contracts.
On another claim by former law minister Datuk Zaid Ibrahim that the decision making in Pakatan Harapan’s government is influenced by “billionaires” and “towkays”, Dr Mahathir said Zaid was free to give opinions.
“That is his own opinion. I do not have to agree with everyone. In this country, we are free to air opinions.
“Maybe he has evidence. He can show proof if he has,” he said.
Zaid, who is a DAP member, had written on his blog that the true supporters of the Pakatan government were the rich, not socialists or supporters of the welfare system.
On another matter, Dr Mahathir said the government is focused on solving issues brought from the past government and “healing” the nation.
“We want to correct what was done wrong so that our country can regain respect. That is our aim.
“On the matter of blaming others, let the law take care of that,” the Prime Minister said.
He was commenting on Council of Eminent Persons (CEP) chairman Tun Daim Zainuddin’s call for Pakatan to stop blaming the past government for the problems it is facing now.
Daim had earlier on Thursday said the Pakatan government needs to concentrate on delivering its promises to the people who voted them during the 14th General Election and forget what happened in the past.
“Six months is enough. Now the government needs to concentrate on delivering.
“People know what happened and that’s why they voted the previous government out. So it’s important for them not to repeat similar mistakes,” he said.
