Playstation Now has reportedly earned over $143 million in 2018, making it the most popular game subscription service available in terms of sheer revenue.
In a report by SuperData Research, PlayStation Now makes up 52% of the game subscription marketshare, beating out the different permutations of EA Access at 33% and Xbox Game Pass at 15%.
According to this data, PlayStation Now generated over three times the revenue that Game Pass did in the same period of time. Because PlayStation Now runs for $20 USD a month and Game Pass is $10 USD a month, it appears the gap in user base isn’t nearly as large as the gap in overall revenue.
However, even with these strong numbers, subscription services only accounted for about 6% of overall PC and console revenue in Q3 2018. However, the data shows that those who subscribe to one of these services spend an average of $25 a month on in-game content, far more than the $10 that non-subscribers typically spend. This was further broken down, showing that subscribers spent most of this money on cosmetic items, followed closely by season passes.
Recent changes to PlayStation Now include the ability to fully download PS4 and PS2 titles to play offline after PS4 games were introduced to the streaming service over a year prior.
Xbox Game Pass is has been making strong changes as well, as all Microsoft Studios games will be available on the service day of release, and Game Pass will be making its way to PC gamers in the future.
