KUALA LUMPUR: The last stage of Gerakan’s long overdue party election is now in full swing.

The party election was delayed since 2016 to make way for the 14th General Election.

Outgoing Gerakan vice-president Datuk Dominic Lau will face off against outgoing party Youth deputy chief Andy Yong for the party presidency.

Meanwhile, outgoing vice-presidents Datuk A. Kohilan Pillay and Oh Tong Keong are vying for the Gerakan deputy president’s post.

The eight vice-presidential candidates are Baljit Singh, G. Parameswaran, Syed Abdul Razak Syed Long, V. Prabagaran, Khoo Shiaw Lee, Choong Vee Hing, Yap Yeen Ming and Raja Petra Kamaruddin’s daughter Raja Sara.

The contest for the Gerakan Youth chief’s post will see a straight fight between Chew Teik Thye and Ooi Zhi Yi.

Their candidacies were confirmed after their roll numbers were drawn by the election committee during the nomination exercise at Gerakan’s headquarters here today.

Voting takes place today and the results will be made known next Saturday night.

The party’s branch and division elections were held in stages since June.

Meanwhile, all 23 candidates vying for a spot in the Gerakan Wanita central committee won without contest.

Janice Wong is now the women’s wing chief while her deputy is the 30-year-old Raja Sara.

The three Gerakan Wanita vice-chiefs are Soh Hoon Lee, Ooi Pei Nar and Yong Fui Ling.

This is Gerakan’s first party polls following its defeat in GE14.

The party is now going it alone after leaving the Barisan Nasional coalition in June.

Its departure from BN signalled the party’s return to the opposition since it joined the coalition in 1972.

Gerakan, however, has steered away from being labelled as an opposition party and prefers to be referred to as an independent political party. © New Straits Times Press (M) Bhd
