KUALA LUMPUR: Umno secretary-general Tan Sri Annuar Musa admitted that he is finding it difficult to hold on to party members, with its lawmakers consistently being lured away.
The Ketereh MP said the issue of Umno members leaving the party will be a contuining problem.
His comments come hot on the heels the departure of Guar Chempedak assemblyman Datuk Dr Ku Abdul Rahman Ku Ismail who quit the party today.
“I have received information that people are constantly approaching our MPs and assemblymen, and already some of them have made up their minds and crossed over.
“So I’m having a tough time as the secretary-general to keep everybody together,” he told reporters when met at the Parliament lobby, here, today.
Kedah state assembly Speaker Datuk Ahmad Kasim had earlier today announced Ku Abdul Rahman’s was quitting the party, having submitted his resignation letter on Sunday.
Prior to this, several other Umno lawmakers have also left the party, most notably Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed, who has since joined Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed’s PPBM.
Annuar said it was high time now that Umno conduct more road tours to engage its elected representatives and other members to discuss on any grouses and dissatisfactions they might have over the party.
“This sort of engagement is the only thing we can do as we can’t force them (to stay in Umno). We can engage, and if they’re not happy over anything, we can sit down and discuss,” he said.
Annuar also noted that some lawmakers had complained that they needed more allocation in order for them to carry out their duties in their constituencies, and that they were not getting enough being in the opposition.
“They feel it’s hard to carry out their responsibilities, so they are using this as an excuse to leave the party, supposedly in the interest of their constituents.
“But at the end of the day, it all comes down to the individual’s principles,” he said.
