A family survives the fire and carnage of Thousand Oaks

Members of a California family have survived two unthinkable tragedies spaced less than 24 hours, reports CBS Los Angeles.

Carmen Edman said her family escaped Malibu on November 8, while the Woolsey Fire fire delighted them one day after her daughter, Deseriee, survived the mass shooting inside the Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks.

"I was in a panic since Wednesday night – since that phone call – and the stress level was way below the chart," said Carmen Edman.

The Edman family was put in security, but their home in Malibu was burned.

It was 48 hours of horror for the family, but all kept things in perspective: they all survived.

"Two near-death experiences that you do not expect," Deserie Edman said.

Deseriee, who spoke with CBS L.A. on Thursday night, said she was still dealing with what had happened at the Borderline Bar and the Woolsey Fire.

"I try to stay strong for my family and friends, and I try to see everything in the most positive way possible in this type of situation," she said.

Deseriee's family knows that their situation could be worse.

"Twelve people did not come home, Ron did not go home, nor did Justin, Christina and all those people who were there, good people," said Carmen Edman.

Deseriee's sister, Destiny Malibu, shared this feeling.

"The fact is that we survived and my sister survived and we are here," she said.

The Edmans attribute the credit to the Sheriff's Sergeant of Ventura County. Ron Helus to keep their whole family. They attended his procession on Thursday.

"It's really tragic that it happened in our city, at Borderline, and Ron had to go in. It's tragic," said Carmen Edman.
