KUALA LUMPUR: The government intends to abolish the mandatory death penalty in Parliament after receiving feedback from the Attorney General's Office (AGC), said Datuk Liew Vui Keong, the prime minister's minister.
He added that the government was still waiting for comments and detailed consideration of the issue by the GCA before submitting it to Parliament for action.
"Right now, the process is still going on with the Attorney General's Office (AGC). He has not yet arrived at the Cabinet. As for the duration of this process … I hope it will be done next month, after the budget (budget 2019), hopefully, "he told reporters yesterday in the lobby of 39, the reception of the Parliament.
Liew said that he had been instructed to impose a moratorium on the Council of Pardons in order to defer the executions of those sentenced to death.
Earlier, when concluding the debate on the mid-term review of the 11th Malaysia Plan for his ministry to Dewan Rakyat, Liew said the government would not be in a hurry to abolish the death penalty.
He added that the government would take into account all points of view and make a thorough study of the proposal to abolish the death penalty, which involves 32 offenses out of eight laws.
Mr. Liew said the government had conducted a study on the abolition of the death penalty, carried out by I-CeLLS, an organization under the auspices of the AGC, with the participation of the famous professor Roger Hood from the University of Oxford.
"The previous government had started the study, if I'm not mistaken in 2013, but the government might have lacked the political will to carry it out (abolishing the death penalty completely)," he said. he declared.
He was responding to Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong (BN-Ayer Hitam), who had advised the government not to rush the abolition of the death penalty. – Bernama
