Assassin’s Creed Odyssey: How to defeat every legendary animal for the Daughters of Artemis

[ad_1]

The Daughters of Artemis quest takes you on a massive journey across Ubisoft’s Greek world in an effort to prove to the god of the hunt that you’re worthy of his attention. The legendary animals can be some of the toughest bosses in the game, but hunting them down rewards a lot of experience and some of the best ranged legendary equipment you can find.

To get started, you’ll need to make your way to the Temple of Artemis in the Sacred Lands of Apollo. There, you’ll meet Daphnae, a friendly young woman that asks you to hunt first the Kalydonian Boar, and then seven other legendary animals across the map.

The Kalydonian Boar

Required Level: 13

Location: West of the Temple of Artemis in Phokis

Despite the fact that the Kalydonian Boar is your first target for this quest and the lowest level enemy you’ll encounter, it’s also undeniably going to be the toughest fight you’re going to have to face. After Daphnae gives you the quest, you can find the boar on a high plateau directly west of the Temple of Artemis.

The difficulty of this fight comes from two things: the waves of boars that the Kalydonian Boar will periodically call throughout the fight, and the fact that you’re probably a low-level character when you first encounter it. Although Assassin’s Creed Odyssey scales everything up to your level, the abilities you have at your disposal are severely limited if you’re level 13 during this fight.

As a result, we recommend one of two things. Either wait to tackle this quest until you’re a higher level and have more abilities to play with, or go hard into Venomous Attacks and Flaming Attacks for the damage over time effects. Either way, if you haven’t taken the last two skills, you’re probably going to want to pick them up before this fight, and assign them to your task bar along with Second Wind and Hero Strike for the healing and high single target damage respectively.

Once you arrive at the Kalydonian Boar’s lair, the fight will immediately kick off, and you probably won’t have time to pull off an assassination or more than a few ranged shots before the boar charges you.

At this point, you’re going to want to focus on learning the boar’s general attacks and patterns, which include a full-blown charge, a lunging swing of its tusks, and your usual blend of close-range melee attacks. Most of the Kalydonian Boar’s attacks start from its haunches and its shoulders, and you can usually see the motion there and begin your dodge in time to at least avoid the damage. Parrying these attacks usually just ends in you taking damage, so focus on dodging and getting the timing of specific attacks down to pull off a perfect dodge and engage the slow time effect so that you can dish out some damage.

You’re also going to want to get used to bouncing between using your Venomous and Flaming Attacks skills. Essentially, always focus on keeping one effect or the other active. The poison is your preferred effect in this case, because it increases the damage you deal to the boar, while also reducing the damage the boar can deal to you.

Activate Venomous Attacks, and focus on getting enough hits in to engage the damage over time effect. As soon as the ability goes on cooldown, activate your Flaming Attacks skill to start piling on additional damage. Your goal is to keep these DoTs active as much as possible, so that you can focus on dodging while the damage ticks instead of having to spend all your time trying to attack the boar directly.

The next phase of the battle is when things get interesting, because that’s when the Kalydonian Boar leaps away from melee and calls in a band of smaller boars to help it during the fight. These boars will continually charge around the battlefield, and are probably one of the deadliest mechanics to this fight.

The trick is to keep your Venomous and Flaming Attacks primed, and start spreading their effects to as many of the boars as possible. Focus on dodging around to avoid their charge attacks, but always dodge towards a boar that you can attack enough to lay a fire or poison effect on or that you can use Hero Strike on to take out if you have the extra adrenaline to spare.

Your goal is to clear these boars out as fast as possible while dodging their attacks as they charge around the battlefield. Once they’re dead and gone you can go back to dealing damage to the Kalydonian Boar until he summons another batch of boars to help it out.

Keep up the pressure, and focus on applying your damage over time effects, and eventually the Kalydonian Boar will just be a pile of bile and ash for you to yank a skin out of for Daphnae.

The Hind of Keryneia

Required Level: 16

Location: Island of Euboea Northeast of Boeotia

The Hind of Keryneia is in a small marshland in Artemision Point on the island of Euboea northeast of Boeotia.

Although the Hind of Keryneia has a full herd around it when you first approach, they’ll scatter the second the battle fights, and although they’ll still occasionally run around the battlefield they’re completely non-hostile.

This is probably the easiest fight out of all the legendary animals, but there are a few things to watch out for, like the grapple attack that can occur if you caught by the Hind’s lunging attack with its horns. That said, even that doesn’t do a huge amount of damage.

The trick to this fight is carefully timing your dodges and also dodging towards the Hind of Keryneia instead of away. Dodging towards the Hind will allow you to quickly whip around and dole out a few quick strikes before it can react. Aside from that the fight is your standard elite enemy that just happens to be in the shape of a massive giant deer.

If you’re having trouble, Venemous and Flaming Attacks can be a combined with ranged attacks for a huge boost to damage that lets you focus a more on dodging rather than fighting, but you probably won’t need it for this one unless you want the battle to go a bit quicker.

The Nemean Lion

Required Level: 22

Location: Southernmost tip of Argolis

You can find the Nemean Lion over on the southernmost tip of Argolis on a large circular battleground surrounded by cliffsides.

The Nemean Lion’s attacks aren’t nearly as complex as some of the other Legendary Animals on this list, and mostly include close range swipes of its claws, and the occasional roar that’ll call a few other lions into the fight.

Rather than a charge attack, the Nemean Lion will rush forward and then engage one of its normal claw swipes. The charge is relatively slow and easy to dodge, making it the perfect window for dodging out of the way to attack its flanks, or just focusing on nailing ranged arrow shots to the Nemean Lion’s head both before and after it charges.

At regular intervals, the Nemean Lion will hop back and summon a few lion companions and we advise you focus them down as fast as possible. That said, it’s not as important as with the Kalydonian Boar or the Lakaon Wolf, so we recommend saving your single target damage skills for actively attacking the Nemean Lion and just focusing down the other lions when they get close.

The Kretan Bull

Required Level: 33

Location: Messara, west side of the Fertile Battlegrounds

The Kretan Bull can be found in Messara, on the western section of the Fertile Battlegrounds. You should be able to identify the location by the usual glowing question mark in the center of a large shallow swamp. As usual, the swamp is a wide staging area where you can duke it out with the bull without anything getting in the way.

The trick to this fight is to go against your instincts and face down the charge. The Kretan Bull’s primary attack is to sprint at you with horns down, and he’ll do so repeatedly. Your instinct is probably going to be to try and circle to run around the attack, especially because there’s plenty of time to sidestep the charge attack before he gets to you.

Instead, you’re going to want to wait until the last possible second before he hits you, then pull off a short dodge to get out of the way. If you get the timing right, you’ll pull off a perfect dodge, time will slow down, and you’ll have a good five or so seconds to get in close for some melee attacks.

You can also try and trail the bull after his charge, to circle around to his flank for a few quick hits. The sheer size of his horns and his tendency to flick around or engage a stomping circular attack make this a dangerous play however.

As usual, if you can hit the bull with enough a poison DoT you’ll reduce his damage, and lightly work his health down. Failing that, a fire DoT will work his health down a bit faster without the damage reduction. If you can bounce between the two effects he’ll melt quickly, but for this fight it’s more important to nail your dodges then to keep any one effect active.

It’s best to settle into a rhythm with this fight.  Wait for the bull to charge, dodge out of the way, and then attack his flanks until the time shift ends. Then, as soon as the bull turns around, try to nail a headshot with your bow before he charges again. Rinse and repeat with the occasional Hero Strike or Overpower attack and eventually the Kretan Bull will go down like a sack of potatoes.

The Lykaon Wolf

Required Level: 36

Location: Dioskouroi Peninsula in Lakonia

The Lykaon Wolf is located on the northwestern edge of the Dioskouroi Peninsula region in Lakonia, south of Sparta proper. Like the other battlegrounds in this guide, you’ll know you’re close when your map updates with a glowing question mark to indicate an unusually interesting location. Scouting the area with Ikaros will give you a bird’s eye view of the flat arena, and should update your quest accordingly.

The Lykaon wolf itself is actually one of the squishiest bosses on the list, but to compensate, he’s fast, hard to hit, and does a massive amount of damage compounded by strikes and attacks from its pack. What’s worse, is that like the Kalydonian Boar you fight earlier in this guide, the Lykaon Wolf will periodically retreat from direct melee to let out a howl that will summon canine allies to his side.

Even more so than with the Kalydonian Boar, taking out these wolves should be your top priority. Although the smaller wolves don’t charge across the battlefield like a wrecking ball of pig flesh, they will whittle your health down from small, light attacks, or combo off of a knockdown attack from the Lykaon Wolf to get some hits in. Even worse, there doesn’t seem to be much of an upper limit to the number of wolves the Lykaon Wolf can summon, which means that if you ignore them for long he’ll continue to summon more and more, until you’re trying to slice through an army of wolves to just get a hit in on your target.

As far as attacks go, the Lykaon Wolf isn’t rocking anything special, mostly just a thrashing melee attack that’s extremely difficult to block at close range but easy enough to dodge, as well as an extremely fast, leaping charge attack that’ll dole out a massive chunk of damage and potentially knock your character to the ground for the rest of the pack to attack.

Attacking the Lykaon Wolf is all about cutting down the number of smaller wolves while dodging the regular charge attacks from your target. To that end, bring your favorite AoE attacks to the party and use them as much as possible. As usual we advise poison or fire effects because of their low adrenaline cost, but abilities like Bull Rush, Ring of Chaos, and the third tier of Sparta Kick are all effective at dolling out some damage in a wide area while giving you some solid breathing room.

Once you deal with the smaller wolves you’re able to concentrate on actually attacking the Lykaon Wolf proper. The ideal time is after pulling off a perfect dodge on one of his charge attacks, but otherwise it’s relatively safe to move into melee range once you’ve cleared out the pack in the area. If you can, it’s best to save any single target, high damage abilities for these moments when you’re going toe to toe with your target.

The good news is that the Lykaon Wolf is pretty light on HP, so a good Hero Strike and Overpower Attack can take a huge chunk out of his health. Just make sure you’re in a good spot to make sure it connects, because otherwise he’s likely to dodge out of the way entirely and you’re left with less adrenaline and a cooldown before you can start dolling out serious damage again.

Keep up the pressure, control the smaller wolves in the area, and the battle will be over faster than you would expect.

The Erymanthian Boar

Required Level: 38

Location: Erymanthos Foothills in Northern Elis

The Erymanthian Boar is located all the way on the western side of the map in the Erymanthos Foothills of Elis just northwest of the Sanctuary of Olympos.

Just like the earlier Giant Boar battle, the Erymanthian Boar is a tough battle, and ranks in at least the top two most difficult battles on this list. Fortunately, it’s not because the Erymanthian Boar summons an army of piggy companions to help mid-battle, but because this particular boar has the ability to release toxic poison across the battlefield to whittle down your health and adrenaline before you have a chance to kill it.

This toxic gas occurs any time the boar misses a charge attack, and its coming is signaled by a cloud of green gas that you’ll want to avoid at all costs. Aside from that, the fight is pretty straightforward, but the poison effect will both reduce your damage and steadily tick away at your health.

As a result, there are two things you need to make this battle go smoothly.

The first is the third level of the Second Wind ability, both for the increased healing it offers, and the ability to cleanse poison status effects when activated. You’ll need to have the level five version of Leonidas’ Spear to unlock it, so if you haven’t already started, you’ll need to cut down quite a few cultists to upgrade your spear to that point.

The second thing is a bit of a forced shift in combat style.

One of the worst things you can do in this fight is hang way back and try to avoid the poison by using arrows or other ranged abilities. If you do, you’re just going to end up triggering the Erymanthian Boar’s charge attack, which equals more gas and more poison. More poison means the boar never even has to hit you to whittle down your health, adrenaline, and second wind cooldowns, and eventually send you to the desynchronization screen.

Instead, you need to get up close and personal, and focus on rotating and dodging around the Erymanthian Boar’s close-range melee attacks to make sure it charges as little as possible. If the Erymanthian Boar doesn’t charge, it can’t emit that horrible gas, so you avoid the bulk of the potential poison damage by keeping near it and forcing it to engage with you directly.

The downside is that you’re likely going to take quite a bit of damage in melee, but just like in the first boar fight, you can see most of its attacks by watching its shoulders and its haunches, because that’ll let you know when it’s about to pivot around for a melee attack.

Stay close, prioritize your healing over single target damage abilities, and you’ll eventually melt your way through the Erymanthian Boar’s health and be able to collect its pelt.

Kallisto the Bear

Required Level: 37

Location: Border between Argolis and Arkadia

Kallisto the Bear can be found on the border between Argolis and the Golden Fields province of Arkadia, in a section of destroyed forest beside a river.

Even though bears can be a real pain in the rear, Kallisto is a pretty straightforward battle because of his relatively slow movement and attack speed. He can still dole out a hefty wedge of damage if he manages to knock you down or even just graze you in melee, but this probably isn’t going to be a battle that’ll really slow you down.

The most important thing to remember is that you need to focus on harassing Kallisto’s flanks and dodging out of the reach of his claws. He will occasionally flip around and smack you if you spend too much time stabbing him from behind, but you can usually see that attack coming by watching his shoulders.

The best tactic is to choose your favorite weapon and damage over time ability, and wait for Kallisto to charge forward and attack. Then, just dodge out of the way, and open up with your best abilities and a single melee combo. As soon as that’s done, dodge right back out to rinse and repeat until he hits the ground. You can throw in a few ranged attacks here and there if you want when he’s far enough away, but otherwise sticking to melee will serve you extremely well in this fight.

Krokottas Hyena

Required Level: 39

Location: Kythera Island

You’ll find the Krokottas Hyena on Kythera Island on the far southern edge of the map, west of Messara and South of Lakonia. The Krokottas Hyena’s hunting ground is on the southernmost tip of the island, and you should be able to spot it by the glowing question mark once you dock.

This fight is tough for a variety of reasons. Unlike most animals the Krokottas Hyena doesn’t seem to have any active indicators for its attacks. It’s possible this is a glitch, but when we fought it, the normal circular indicators that tell you when to dodge or parry an attack weren’t present at all, which means that pulling off dodges or parries is incredibly difficult. The best advice we can give is to watch the hyena’s movements closely, and do your best to predict any attacks that might come your way. It didn’t seem like it was possible to parry any of his attacks, but that may have been poor timing on our part.

Perfect dodges are possible, and are best performed when the Hyena lunges at you. Keep in mind that this hyena is particularly quick, and the window to pull off a perfect dodge is extremely short. To take the Krokottas Hyena down, you’re going to want to do your best to spec for ranged damage and focus on pulling off quick, snap shots just before the Hyena lunges. Then dodge, and if you manage to pull off a perfect dodge, go in for a quick round of melee strikes.

If you get in a tight spot where you’re low on health and adrenaline, it’s best to focus exclusively on dodging and quick arrow shots to recover adrenaline until you can trigger a dose of Second Wind. Either way, do your best to constantly strafe in one direction to avoid any surprise lunges.

Poison arrows and melee attacks are highly recommended to reduce damage, and only engage in lengthy melee attacks if you have a decent amount of adrenaline built up to use on healing. We found that Overpower Attacks and Hero Strike have problems connecting for some reason, but that could be because we were using daggers at the time. You might want to experiment with a weapon with longer reach to see if it was an issue with accuracy or if the Hyena has in innate immunity to them.

This is a tough fight, but focus on nailing your dodges and arrow shots, and you’ll be skinning the Krokottas Hyena in short order.

Returning to Daphnae

You can return to Daphnae with all of the legendary animal pelts at once or just one at a time. This is your chance to either romance or just get to know her a bit better as you hand over every pelt.

Once you kill the final legendary animal, she’ll move to a new location in Chios on the northwestern portion of the map.

When you find her, she’ll offer you a chance for one final hunt, and your decision will determine whether you become the leader of the Daughters of Artemis, or cast out entirely. As is often the case with Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, your decision is likely to have an effect on future quests and interactions in the area.

Choose wisely.
