He was often forced to operate in the shadow of several illustrious teammates. After his transfer to Madrid, he arrived in the Spanish capital the same summer as Cristiano Ronaldo.
While the Portuguese have evolved, Benzema is getting closer to a decade of loyal service with the Blancos.
He made more than 420 appearances for Real and it misses more than 200 goals for the giants of La Liga.
The 198th strike in Madrid came against Viktoria Plzen on Wednesday, as he opened the scoring in a continental clash with just 11 minutes on the clock.
Benzema has now found his target in the Champions League in each of his 10 seasons in Spain, having participated in four consecutive campaigns for Lyon.
Only Messi and Raul, legend of Madrid, can claim to have imitated this success during their illustrious career as a player.
Benzema scored his first senior goal in the Champions League, in his debut competition against Rosenborg in December 2005.
He then scored 11 other European goals for Lyon before moving to Madrid.
With the Blancos, Benzema has increased its efforts to 57.
The return, which earned him four titles, was enough to see him overtake Ruud van Nistelrooy and be placed in fourth place on the list of the best scorers of all time.
He only has 14 points to match on Raul, while Messi and his eternal rival Ronaldo have both crossed the 100-goal mark.
