Carbon footprint will determine impact of renewable energy: Yeo

KUALA LUMPUR: All infrastructure or electricity generation projects will have an impact on the environment, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.

Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change Minister Yeo Bee Yin said a carbon footprint analysis would determine which types of renewable energy (TBB) project would create high impact in terms of carbon emissions into the atmosphere.

“Carbon footprint which is a life cycle analysis is determined not only while operating but is calculated from the start of the manufacturing process, during production, right through use of the products and its eventual disposal,” she said during the Ministers’ Question Time.

She said this in reply to a supplementary question from Khoo Poay Tiong (PH-Kota Melaka) who wanted the government to state the impact of large-scale solar projects on the environment and steps to achieve a sustainable energy balance.

Yeo said based upon life cycle assessment solar energy has much lower emissions than electricity generated by using gas.

Meanwhile, she said the government has set a 20% renewable energy target in electricity generation, from the total energy production, by 2025 and this would not include power generated from large hydropower generators of more than 100MW.

In order to achieve the 20 per cent target, Yeo said the government through the Planning and Implementation Committee of Electricity Supply and Tariff has analysed and found that 3,991MW renewable power installed capacity, must be added to the electricity supply system.

She said the government would undertake an open tender for the third round of the large scale solar (LSS3) project offering a total capacity of 500MW, to achieve the 20 per cent renewable energy target.

The estimated value of the LSS3 project is RM2 billion and details of the project will be announced in Jan 2019. — Bernama
