After sustaining an injury on his 450th Serie A appearance, the club captain will be absent at least his side's next two games
Daniele De Rossi will go to CSKA Moscow, and possibly matches beyond that, head coach Eusebio Di Francesco confirmed.
Rossi was injured in the first half of Roma's last match, a 1-1 draw away to Napoli, in what was his 450th Serie A appearance.
And the club captain will miss Saturday's trip to Fiorentina and the Group G game away to CSKA.
"De Rossi will not be involved against Fiorentina or CSKA – and he may miss the Sampdoria game too," Di Francesco told a news conference.
Di Francesco to change up formations, but admits that they do not play Rossi's injury.
"That's a possibility I did not like the way we played in Napoli – we were too submissive," the Roma boss said. "It's one of the things I have to weigh up. I have not decided yet
"I do not want to change the shape of the team too much at the moment."
Di Francesco also trafficked Bryan Cristante, who replaced De Rossi against Napoli, would keep that up for the match against Fiorentina, dismissing questions over the midfielder's fitness, but saying the coaching staff is still working on the mental aspects of his game.
"I read somewhere that I think this is supposedly not on the same level but the fitness tests we did this week," Di Francesco added. "The mental side of the game is fundamental for all players . We're working with him, he's training well and is very willing to learn.
"I do not know if he will replace De Rossi. [Lorenzo] Pellegrini can play in that central midfield role too, as he has on other occasions. "
