Last month, in Paris, the Vietnamese car manufacturer VinFast unveiled two high-end cars, the LUX A2.0 sedan and the SUV LUX SA2.0. The company also announced plans to manufacture a battery-powered electric car developed by EDAG, an electric bus with support from Siemens, as well as an urban car based on a GM. Well, the VinFast Fadil is exactly that: a more affordable urban car that the company hopes to meet the growing demand for cars and growing property in Vietnam.
For starters, the Fadil, which debuted in Hanoi, is essentially a refitted version of the Vauxhall Viva / Opel Karl and, by extension, the Chevrolet Spark. It is a robust A-type crossover with a raised mount (18mm height) and unpainted plastic moldings all around.
Silver roof rails, robust front and rear bumpers with integrated skids, and 15-inch alloy wheels. The headlights are halogen reflectors, but they are equipped with LED DRLs. Other exterior features include front fog lights, combination LED taillights, the mudguard mounted turn signal and the keyless entry system.
No interior photo has yet been released, but the Fadil is expected to feature the same restraint cabin as the Viva / Karl / Spark. This includes a multifunction steering wheel, shift paddles (top specification only) and fabric seats. The rear seat folds into a 60:40 split configuration, increasing the trunk volume to 1,013 liters.
A 7-inch Navi 4.0 IntelliLink multimedia triplet with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto features is also available on the GM triplet. It also supports Bluetooth hands-free calling, audio streaming and directory access. The main unit is connected to six speakers. Smaller variants could get a more basic R300 BT unit with Bluetooth and audio streaming functions, but this has not been confirmed.
In terms of performance, the Fadil is powered by a 1.4-liter petrol engine developing 98 hp at 6,200 rpm and a torque of 128 Nm at 4,400 rpm. The engine is coupled to a CVT, which drives the front wheels.
This 1.4-liter engine is the same engine as the latest generation Chevrolet Spark. In other markets, the Viva / Karl is available with a smaller 1.0-liter three-cylinder gasoline engine, generating 73 hp and 95 Nm of torque. Here we get a five-speed Easytronic 3.0 automatic transmission.
Where the VinFast Fadil really shines, it's in the security department. According to reports, the full range model comes with ABS with EBD, and includes an electronic stability control system, a traction control system, a slope assist, a ROM anti-rollover function, a camera of recoil with rear sensors and six airbags.
We do not know much else about the car, but we know that it will cost about 423 million Vietnamese dongs in its domestic market. The Fadil will be built in a GM-approved manufacturing facility in Hanoi (VinFast's second factory), which focuses on the production of the company's small cars. Its main plant in Hai Phong is currently under construction at a cost of 3.5 billion US dollars (14.67 billion RMB).
