Activists believe Khalid Samad could help fulfill Pakatan Harapan's promise to reinstate municipal elections
Khalid Samad succeeds Tengku Adnan Mansor. KUALA LUMPUR: A local government expert has urged Khalid Samad, the new federal minister of the territories, to ensure a clear separation of powers between his ministry and the mayor of Kuala Lumpur, saying his predecessor did not do so.
Senior counsel Derek Fernandez also said that the existence of the ministry was justified by law, adding that without it, there would be problems in passing the local plans of Kuala Lumpur.
"The Federal Capital Act requires it, but there must be a clear separation between the executive powers of the ministry and those of the mayor and the city hall," he said. at the FMT, in reference to the Kuala Lumpur City Hall
. Fernandez said that Khalid's predecessor, Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor, was perceived as an interference in the mayor's jurisdiction.
He is confident that Khalid's appointment would help fulfill Pakatan Harapan's commitment to restore local elections
. He added that the lobby group on local issues wanted to meet Khalid to discuss the controversies surrounding the development of Kuala Lumpur, exposed after May 9.
